BCSA 5/8/2021 Field Target Match Report
Another Season of Field Target in underway at BCA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY). Our weather this year, just like the past few Springs has been very wet. There has only been a handful of days where rain hasn’t been in the forecast. The early forecast for Match Day was looking pretty good……BUT….as the week progressed, things started to look bleak! We looked for breaks in the forecast and spent 2 days prior getting as much done while we stayed dry. Late Thursday afternoon the targets were set, Friday midday the canopies were up and we were ready for the final prep on Saturday morning! Due to the not so friendly looking forecast, we sent out a mass email notifying our potential participants that the days festivities were going to be delayed by 1 hour and that sight-in would be at 9am. All weather forecasts were starting to come together and it appeared that by 8 or 9 am we’d be pretty much rain free
Starting late Friday afternoon and lasting to near 9:00am we had the heavy rain (0.75 “ to 1.0”) that was forecast and even wet snow flurries. My wife and I arrived early Saturday morning to get things finished up and see how things fared. The first order of business was the pulling of the 50 strings. While we were finishing up, our first two competitors of the day arrived, Brian Van Liew and Jim Danvers. After a little chit chat, both jumped in and helped finish the prep work.
Sight-in, registration, score card prep and the signing of waivers were all handled right at the ft range this time around. The rain had pretty much vanished by 9am! The day pretty much stayed overcast and cool. We did have a few stray sprinkles, but they didn’t amount to much or last very long.
Competitors started arriving a few at a time. We did have a bunch of cancellations, but 12 brave souls decided that they were coming no matter what!!! The layout for the match had 15 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (6 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty of 34.21T. There was a definite little tricky breeze at times. Dennis Himes commented after the match that there was a time when his wind flag was blowing one way and the pollen flying around out near the target was going the total opposite direction!
We had a couple of new visitors to our range even though the forecast wasn’t pretty. Chuck Senkus was able to join us for the first time at our range after a slightly extended hiatus due to a job change. Nic talked a fellow classmate into slinging some lead at those pesky metallic critters for the first time! Welcome Brian!!
We had 1 cold line to correct a string issue…………my fault! I replaced a string on Friday with a different one but didn’t verify that the quick connector was on all the way. No other issues after that and things went pretty quickly! This was the first time that some people saw some of the others due to the worldwide 2020 shutdown! There was a lot of catching up to do..
Once the rifle match portion was winding down and people were finishing, a bunch decided that they were taking off….totally understandable! When everyone completed the rifle match, there was more chit chat, goodbyes and then the remaining 7 of us picked up the (30) rifle targets and ran the strings for the (20) 10m/pistol targets. Thomas Himes took top honors for the day shooting an outstanding 57/60 in Hunter PCP. The next highest competitor was Brian Van Liew with a 50/60 in Open PCP. Seven of the 12 competitors were over 60% for the day. Not too bad since it’s very early in the season and the weather hasn’t been the best for people to be out practicing and the match schedule is just starting to ramp up.
We had 4 of us shooting the 10m/pistol match. For those curious as to the 10m thing, we are allowing shooters to compete with open sighted rifles in a current AAFTA allowed rifle position for fun. The only requirements are the rifle must have an unmagnified sight and be kept down around 7-8 fpe at the muzzle. Just a fun thing to get more people to participate during the pistol match. For this match, Eric Brewer and Brian Van Liew shot Hunter Pistol while Nathan Thomas shot more with his newly stocked Walther LGU to get more of a feel of the new set-up. I was the only one shooting 10m. There were others that were going to shoot 10m, but left after they finished the rifle match due to the chilly weather.
The pistol match consisted of a 40 shot match with 2 standing lanes! Yep, 8 of the 40 shots were standing! In the pistol battle, Brian was victorious with a score of 31, just 3 points over Eric’s 28. Both ended up with 2/8 on the standing lanes..
No cold lines during the Pistol match. The difficulty for the match was 32.62T.
At the conclusion of the pistol match……the 5 of us that remained all helped with the teardown then a little more chit chat before we parted ways.
Thanks to all that came out to play in what turned out to be a not too bad of a day. It was a little overcast, chilly with a high of 48 degrees, but the rain finally eased to allow us to get together!

BCSA 6/12/2021 Field Target Match Report
Another Great Day at BCSA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY)! My wife Pat and I just finished pulling strings at around 7:00am when I noticed our first participant for the day pull in. We went back over to the parking lot and said our hellos to Tom and Eileen Ryan and there chocolate lab Zinc! This was Tom’s first trip up to our range. After some catching up, Tom, Pat and I got the sight-in range set and were ready for the rest of the competitors for the day to arrive. Little by little, people began arriving. We ended up with 19 shooters for the day. Besides it being Tom’s first trip, Keith Walters joined us! He and his wife were in the area and he thought he come and shoot a match with us! Great to have you both there today!
After sight-in, we made our way over to the Field Target Range while Pat, Eileen and Zinc cleaned up all the sight-in targets and stuff! Thanks ladies!!! The layout for the match was similar but different to the last match. 15 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (6 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty this time of 33.30T.
There were no cold lines during the match, BUT there was an unruly target! Tom Himes noticed that the long target (a 36 yarder with a 1.5” KZ) on the standing lane fell with a face hit on his second shot. I told him since we weren’t doing awards to be honest with himself as far as the score. I also asked him to take some extra shots at that target after he finished that lane to verify that it fell more times then not with face hits. After his verification, I notified everyone of the issue and said shoot it but be honest with their scores on it. No other issues!
There was a breeze that popped up a few times, but nothing that made the PCP shooters hold out of the KZ. Not sure about the Piston shooters, but if they did it probably wasn’t on too many shots. The Match High score for the day, a 54/60 went to Dennis Himes followed by a 52/60 posted by Keith Walters! Nice shooting Gentlemen! Tom Himes started out on track to meet or exceed those scores but developed rifle issues and had to take a DNF. Kevin Kunkle pulled his LGU out of storage, checked his zero, came to the match and posted a nice 37/60 in Hunter Piston with it! Chuck Senkus made some adjustments to his Hunter PCP setup from the last match and posted a nice 38/60 which was enough to tie Rick Vaeth! Jim Danvers set aside his Marauder and brought along his Taipan Veteran in 0.177. Jim scored a 31/60 with the new setup! Mike Norris got reacquainted with his long lost eye cuff and shot a nice 44/60. Guess his eye cuff forgave him pretty quick! After the rifle match was complete, there was a lot of chit chat then I asked the people remaining to help and cleanup the rifle targets and pull the strings on the pistol targets. In no time flat, the targets were loaded!
About one half of people took off after the rifle match and before the pistol match. Seemed like everybody who came out today had a great time! Hope both Tom Ryan and Keith Walters enjoyed their first trips to BCSA and hope to see them return sometime again in the future!
10 of us shot the 10m/pistol match. This time around, Eric Brewer shot both 10m and Hunter Pistol while Nathan Thomas shot both 10m and Limited Pistol. Doug Dunlap came down for a visit and shot Hunter Pistol. Paul Manktelow and myself shot our 10m rifles, Craig Evans opted for his RWS Model 6 silhouette pistol, Leo Gonzales shot it all standing with his FT rifle and Bill Campbell and Luis Hopewell shot for fun!
We did have 1 cold line for the pistol match. The chain on the Gamo string got caught on the bolt at the base of the target. Quick fix and back to the action. For those looking to try something different, ask your local pistol Match Director if you can shoot a pistol match with your 10m or low powered open sighted rifle. It is definitely a fun and relaxing time! Guess the yardage….guess the hold over/under….take the shot! No other issues during the match. The pistol match consisted of a 40 shot match with 2 standing lanes and the difficulty for the match was 33.34T. Below is the summary for the match based on shooting pistol. Not sure what the multiplier id for a 580 fps rifle with open sights
After the match, those of us there quickly pulled the 20 targets and took down the canopies! Again, super quick teardown and GREATLY appreciated! A little more chit chat and then the final goodbyes and all were gone till next month! Paul Manktelow stuck around a little longer and helped us put all the stuff that stays at the club in the shed before he took off. That wasn’t necessary but was greatly appreciated! Thanks to all that came out and hope the ones that made their first trip enjoyed the match and the way we are set up!

BCSA 7/10/2021 Field Target Match Report
Another match is in the books at BCSA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY)! We definitely caught a break for this one! The weather in the area has been extremely wet lately and is forecast for the same all this upcoming week. We have had plenty of severe thunderstorms come through and there was still some damage and homes in the nearby that didn’t have power. Match day was overcast to partly sunny with lower humidity and just the slightest of tricky breezes that would pop up at the most un-opportune time.
The strings were all pulled and the sight-in range was set by 7:30am. The first to arrive for the Day were the Himes’, Dennis, Ronda, Tom and Janice. They also brought along Loki to keep an eye on all of us and to keep us in line! Shortly after, the other participants started to file in. We ended up with 13 shooters for the day. A little lighter turnout this time around due to vacations, shows and other prior commitments. One of the shooters for the day was Doug Rogers who made a long awaited return trip to our club. He took an unplanned detour on the way down but arrived just before sight-in ended. After letting him take a few warmup shots, we headed off to the course.

We set another similar layout for this match as we did for the last match. 15 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (6 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty this time of 32.89T.

We had one cold line during the match to check out a target in the shadows that looked a bit off. All was well with it! All the hits were on the right edge of the paddle and due to the shadows it looked like the paddle was cocked off to one side. No other issues Throughout the match!
Well.............we had an unexpected visitor when we were about 80% done with the rifle match! A good size 3 - 4 year old Black Bear decided to gallop along the right edge of our FT range. Basically it was within 15 -20 feet of our last lane. It went along the edge then cut into where the targets were and then slowed down and just meandered into the woods. Luckily it didn't step on any targets or get caught up into any of the strings!
The Match High score for the day, a 51/60 went to Dennis Himes followed by a 49/60 posted by Tom Himes! Nice shooting Gentlemen! Wyatt developed a scope issue early on, but powered through to finish the match. Pretty sure that issue was solved as soon as he returned home! After the rifle match was complete, we asked the people remaining to help and cleanup the rifle targets and pull the strings on the pistol targets. In no time flat, the targets were loaded and we were ready for the pistol match /10m match!
<

<

Out of the 13 shooters for the day, 9 stayed to shoot the second match. Craig Evans and his grandson Wyatt opted to shoot Hunter Pistol while the other 7 of us shot with our non-magnified sighted 10m/low powered rifles.
<

First, a little back story on the 10m/low powered thing for those that are curious. For quite sometime, I have wanted someone to try shooting the pistol match with their 10m rifles. Back in October of 2019 I figured I’d set the pistol match with all fullsize targets and all painted black with yellow killzones. I made an announcement that I was going to have a low powered non-magnified rifle match running concurrently with the pistol match. 11 people took me up on that offer and had a blast! Plenty of old 10m rifles plus some current turned down ones were used. The rules are simple. Try to keep the energy to 7 fpe at the muzzle or less, an unmagnified sight (Peep, Open, red dot, etc.), any Field Target position AND HAVE FUN!
This part of the match has been well received! Plenty of comments like this goes quick, I did better on the standing lanes with this then my FT rifle, etc.
Originally, we were going to alternate month to month with one being a pistol match and the next being a 10m match but thought why? Run them side by side all of the time! The target color scheme has now changed and will stay the way it is. We are using all white targets with black killzones. It is definitely a fun and relaxing time! Guess the yardage….guess the hold over/under….take the shot! The layout for this months match was:
|
Total Targets |
Smallest KZ for targets >30yds |
Avg KZ in |
Avg Dist yds |
Course Std Dev |
Avg DF No Env |
|
20 |
1 1/2 |
1.2 |
22.8 |
4.95 |
33.34 |
Now, the above reflects the difficulty based on Pistol Match. Not sure what difficulty level you would apply to the rifles! For this match, we had 2 standing lanes with 1” targets at 12 and 15 yards and 1.5” targets at 17 and 20 yards.
If you ever have the opportunity to try it at a match sometime, go ahead…………..you will probably have fun!
Craig Evans shot Hunter Pistol with his Crosman 1701 but developed a leak and had to take a DNF. Wyatt also shot Hunter Pistol using a Crosman 1720T. The rest of us used our rifles which included a Benjamin 347, Air Arms T200, Diana D75 and Doug Rogers was using his Crosman MAR! Bill Campbell used an Umarex 850 M2 and Louis Hopewell used his thumbholed Beeman AR2078, both shooting for fun as usual! Lots of smiles, fun and NO cold lines!

<

After the match, those of us there quickly pulled the 20 targets for another super quick teardown that is always GREATLY appreciated! Thanks to all that came out and hope to see the ones that had prior commitments at the next one!

Saturday August 14
BCSA 8/14/2021 Field Target Match Report
Well, after an interesting tropical like week, we were curious to see how the day would turnout for match day! The day started near the 70’s and the humidity from the past week hung on for sight-in and for the start match. As the day progressed. The weather turned out fantastic! A few peaks of sun, low humidity and unfortunately, only the slightest of breezes.
We had a light turnout with just 13 people on hand for the day. Jerry LaRocca and Tom Wade made their first trips to BCSA this season. There was a lot of catching up and chit chat during the sight-in session. After an hour of making sure things were set, we headed over to the FT range.
The course of fire was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, middle, right. There was also the usual 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. The stats for the days 60 shot course are as follows:
I called a cold line shortly after we started. As I was lining up to shoot the second target on the first lane, I noticed a couple of small branches fell due to the previous nights storms. It could have been shot through, but I figured since I was the first shooter that I’d remedy the situation right off the bat. No other cold lines or issues for the remainder of the match.
When all was said and done, there ended up being 5 scores in the 50’s! Brian Van Liew took Match high honors for the day with a 55! Following right behind Brian was Dennis Himes with a 54, Thomas Himes with a 53, Jerry LaRocca with a 52 and Thomas Wade with a 51!!! Excellent shooting to all!
After the conclusion of the rifle match, a bunch of the competitors jumped in and helped pick up and pack away the rifle targets while my wife and Kevin Kunkle pulled the strings for the pistol targets, thanks you 2!
After a short break and some goodbyes to those not participating in the second match, we took to the lanes for the pistol/low powered non magnified match! Nathan Thomas shot 2 classes, Limited Pistol and low powered with his Diana 75. Brian Van Liew shot Hunter Pistol with his custom FX Elite. The remainder of us all shot the low powered rifle class. Thomas Himes was rocking a newly acquired Crosman Challenger, Paul Manktelow was using his Air Venturi Bronco with a RedDot and Louis Hopewell was using his pawn shop found HW35 that he got for 1 heck of a deal…….less than 1/3 of retail!
The course of fire was 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, right. There were 2 standing lanes and the stats for the days 40 shot course are as follows:
Nathan and Brian both were less than a handful of points away from a clean match. Nathan had a 36 while Brian shot a 35! Nice job you 2! Thomas Himes has his new toy dialed in! He shot an impressive 31 which was well ahead of the low powered rifle pack!
After the conclusion of the match, those of us remaining jumped in and made super quick work of the cleanup.! All the help is GREATLY appreciated!

BCSA 9/11/2021 Field Target Match Report
On this somber day, we had our 5th match of the 2021 season at BCSA. We had an excellent Fall type day with temperatures starting out in the upper 40’s and ending in the upper 60’s. There was also just enough breeze at times to rethink your hold before pulling the trigger!
My wife Pat and I arrived at the range around 6:30 am to start pulling strings and getting the rest of the FT course set-up. Just as we finished that, Brian VanLiew arrived and jumped in and helped us set-up the sight in range……the help was greatly appreciated! In no time flat, we were set and ready for the day!
We had another light turnout with just 9 people on hand for the day. The course of fire was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, middle, right. There was also the usual 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. The stats for the days 60 shot course are as follows:
No Cold Lines and other than the string getting caught up on the Egrets foot once and a while, all went well! Brian VanLiew took Match high honors for the day with a 56 in Open PCP! The next nearest competitor was Nathan Thomas who shot a 45 in WFTF Piston! Great going guys!
After the conclusion of the rifle match, a bunch of the competitors jumped in and helped pick up and pack away the rifle targets. After a short break 6 of us took to the lanes for the pistol/low powered non magnified match! Brian VanLiew was the lone pistol shooter and was shooting Hunter Pistol with his custom FX Elite. The remainder of us all shot the low powered rifle class. Doug Dunlap joined us for the second match and shot his stocked Crosman 1720 for fun! Always nice to see him and Betsy!
The course of fire was 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, right. There were 2 standing lanes and the stats for the days 40 shot course are as follows:
We had 1 cold line due to a couple of people walking in the woods beyond our range. Pat took care of that and we were back to the action in short order!! After the conclusion of the match, those of us remaining jumped in and made super quick work of the cleanup as usual then decided on a place for lunch! As always, all the help is GREATLY appreciated!
Our last match of 2021 will be October 9th! Hope to see you there!

BCSA 10/9/2021 Match Report
Another excellent Fall type day with temperatures starting out in the upper 50’s and ending in the upper 60’s. There was plenty of wind, and at one point the falling leaves were rising! Definitely made you choose wisely as to where you were gonna hold.
As our usual match day agenda, we arrived at the range around 6:30 am to start pulling strings. This time around, my wife and I pulled half of them using the headlights of our truck. Didn’t think that sunrise was that late. After finishing the strings, we headed over to set the sight-in range. Just as we started, Chuck Senkus arrived and jumped in to help. About halfway through, Brian VanLiew arrived and jumped in and helped too! The help is always greatly appreciated! We were set for the day!
We had 12 competitors for the day, including Tony Garland who made his first (and hopefully not his last) trip to our range. He chose to hop in his trusty old truck and make the trip down this month and pretty sure he believes he made the right choice. The course of fire was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, middle, right. There was also the usual 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. The stats for the days 60 shot course are as follows:
Wind with constant wind and the occasional gusts, pretty sure I’d put the difficulty closer to the 41 figure:
Had one cold line due to the string getting caught up on the Egrets foot again this month! It behaved for a while, now it’s time for an intervention! Gonna have to move the string anchor point to a different location. Brian VanLiew took Match high honors for the day with a 52 in Open PCP followed by Jerry LaRocca with a 48 in Hunter PCP. Great going guys, especially with the switching conditions……must be all that clean living :)!
After the conclusion of the rifle match, everyone jumped in and helped pick up and pack away the rifle targets. While strings were being wound, Pat and Kevin Kunkle started pulling the strings for the10m/pistol targets and as people finished, they too helped to pull the string for the other targets. Awesome and quick when everybody jumps in! Thank You!
After a short break 8 of us took to the lanes for the pistol/low powered non magnified match! Louis Hopewell and Bill Campbell shot their pistols……but, the were not scoped and they mixed it up shooting the supported and hands only. Believe they both had their usual fun time! The remainder of us all shot the low powered rifle class. Doug Rogers talked Rick Vaeth into staying and sharing his Crosman MAR with him…I think Doug wants to take that ask back since Rick not only had a blast but took top honors in 10m with a 25/40 in some tough conditions! I talked Jerry LaRocca into shooting a few lanes with us. He shared my AA T200 with me. The very first target he shot at was a 1 1/2” KZ at 35 yards and it was a knock down! His reaction was priceless and that is why we will continue to hold this combined pistol/low powered un-magnified rifle match! Not 100% sure, but I’d be willing to bet that both Rick and Jerry may be doing some off season window shopping……here fishy fishy!!!
The course of fire was 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane. 2 shots per target with the shooting order being left, right. There were 2 standing lanes and the stats for the days 40 shot course are as follows, again, I’d err to the 41T difficulty due to us all shooting non magnified sights in a constant ever changing wind:
After the conclusion of the match, everyone jumped in and made super quick work of the cleanup as usual! As always, all the help is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks to all that came out and made this year another success! Hope you all have a safe and healthy off season and we’ll see you in 2022!!!
