BCSA 5/9/2015 Field Target Match Report

What a great day for a field target match! The temperature started around 60 degrees and rose to the mid 80’s by the end of the match! There were bright partly cloudy skies along with an ever switching wind that was near calm to gusts of up to 20 mph!

We had 22 participants on hand for today’s match! We had a couple of first timers as well as a returning veteran that has been MIA for a while! Dennis Himes was on hand for his first field target match. He had previously participated in the Pyramyd Air Cup last year. His score of 43 in Hunter PCP (second highest score overall) shows he is no stranger to competition! I’m sure we’ll see more of Dennis! The other first time field target participant was Sam Wolkoff. This was Sam’s very first match and he ended up in a shootoff for 3rd place in Hunter PCP. His score of 33 put him right near the middle of the pack! Pretty sure we’ll see him as a new regular too! Dan Dofton returned to the field target game after taking a few years off. It’s great to see him back on the lanes!

The layout was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane with one standing lane and one kneeling lane for 60 shots. The Troyer for today’s match was 30.8T. This is definitely deceiving due to there was no wind or light/dark factors applied. This layout was also a little tougher than I’d setup for the first match of the year, but with next weekends Grand Prix event in our area, I figured I give everyone a decent practice round. High score for the day was a 47 shot by Jerry LaRocca in WFTF Piston.

After the rifle match was completed we handed out awards, celebrated our junior (who want’s to not be considered a junior anymore) Nic’s Birthday with some cake and reset the targets for the pistol field target match. Happy Birthday Nic!

There were 6 pistol shooters for todays match. Nathan Thomas was the lone Open Pistol shooter. The other 5 opted to shoot Hunter Pistol. The difficulty for the pistol match was a 19.8T. Definitely not a “cake walk”, but Birthday Boy Nic was able to come out on top we a score of 21 out of 40!!! There were definitely more hard targets than there were easy ones!

The day concluded with the pistol award presentation then everyone jumped in and helped with cleanup! Boy, I wish setup went as fast as tear down!! Thanks to you all!!

Now on to the results:

BCSA 6/20/2015 Field Target Match Report

Well, Mother Nature DID allow us to get out and play! The weather forecast for the match started out as a nice mid seventies day with partly cloudy skies BUT as match day neared, the forecast kept changing to midday showers. Luckily the rain stayed away and we were able to get through both the rifle and pistol match dry! The day started out with temps in the low 50’s and rose to the mid 70’s by the end of the match, The sky went from sunny to overcast and the wind was, as always light to moderate and ever switching! What a great day!

We had 20 shooters on hand for the match which was a surprise considering the CAAFTC was last weekend! I guess we can’t get enough of this Field Target thing or we all needed to redeem ourselves and come out to prove that we could still shoot!

Sight-in

We had another first time shooter on hand for this match! Michael Norris came out to partake in the fun! Welcome Michael! Come to find out he lives within 10 miles of one of our regulars Kevin Kunkle! Boy, you never know who lives right around the corner! Now we need to figure out how to find these people so we can continue to keep growing. Pretty sure Kevin along with Art Deuel will be hooking up with Michael and will be doing quite a few plinking sessions!

Michael

Leo

The rifle match went on without a hitch! Well we did have a shooter that developed a problem and had to drop out. Doug Dunlap had a jam in his FX and had to pull out to repair the issue. Nathan Thomas came out with the match high of 52 shooting WFTF. He was closely followed by Dennis Himes with a 50 who was shooting Hunter PCP. The Match consisted of 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a total of 60 shots. Without the wind or light and dark factors, the difficulty was a 28.4T.

Dennis

At the conclusion of the rifle match, Veronika brought out a Birthday cake and we celebrated Hector’s Birthday! Happy Birthday Hector! No, I’m not at liberty to reveal his age! While everyone was getting their sugar high’s we handed out the rifle match awards and I moved 2 targets to set up for the pistol match.

For the Pistol match, we ran 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane for a 40 shot match. The pistol match difficulty was a 20.0T using the rifle factors. I opted not to do any forced position lanes in order to give the guys a break. Two shooters opted to shoot Open Pistol and 3 shooters shot Hunter Pistol. I left all the targets from the rifle match out there, and just moved 2 targets in for the pistol match. Dennis Himes, Sam Wollcoff and myself shot all 60 targets for a second rifle match. With no forced position lanes, the difficulty was a 24.0T. Nic Gregoris (our former Junior) shot an open pistol score of 29. This was enough to edge out Nathan Thomas who shot a 21 with his 3.6 ft-lb IZH! IMPRESSIVE! Dennis continued to roll on shooting a 57 out of 60!.

At the conclusion of the pistol match, we handed out awards, tore down and packed up! I want to thank everyone for coming out and for lending a helping hand with setting up and tearing down!

Now on to the results!

BCSA 8/8/2015 Field Target Match Report

What an awesome day, almost a mirror of our June match, only better! The day started out with temps in the low 50’s and rose to the mid 70’s by the end of the match. We had bright skies, light winds and LOW humidity! What a great day!

There were 21 shooters on hand for today’s match..........well there were 21 except Sam Wolkoff’s Daystate took a tumble during sight-in and he decided to opt out. So that left 20 of us to partake in a day of fun!.

Sight-In photo IMG_3008_zpsu1ov2hfp.jpg

Another match and another new shooter! Kevin Kunkle brought 8 year old Kenny Mapes out for his first Field Target match! It might have been Kenny’s first match, but definitely not his first time behind a scope! Kenny shot using 2 points for a knock down, 1 point for a face hit and a 0 for a clean miss. Well, Kenny had an 81 out of 120 with 30 knock downs! Way to go Kenny!! Kenny is also a baseball player, so hopefully as his schedule allows we’ll see him back!

Kenny

Scott McGhee (PA) and Tom Hines (PA) joined us for their first time to our range and Mike Norris (PA) (our new shooter of the month - last month) returned for another go! Welcome & welcome back guys!

The long distance award for today’s match goes to Bill Day who traveled 800+ miles round trip from Maine to join in the fun. Art, Rich, Larry, Dennis, Craig, Kevin and Kenny all came up from Pennsylvania, Leo & Hector from Connecticut while all the rest were from various points of New York.

We had one little string tangle near the beginning of the rifle match which my wife Pat made quick work of in making the speedy repair. Other than that 1 little issue, there were no other cold lines!

We used our normal 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot course. Without the additions of light/dark factors, the rifle course was a modest T28.4 difficulty. There was 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane.

At the conclusion of the rifle match, we took a short break, handed out awards and I pulled 1 reducer to get ready for the pistol match. With the layout that was used for the rifle match, there were no targets that needed re-positioning, just the removal of that 1 reducer. The layout for the pistol match was 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane for a 40 shot match. The difficulty due to not moving targets this time around ended up being a T34.9. Definitely not a gimme course! Due to the difficulty level, I decided not to do any positional lanes this time around.

We had 4 pistol shooters all shooting Hunter pistol as well as 6 of us that basically re-shot the course with our rifles or different rifles all for fun and practice.

At the conclusion of the pistol match, we handed out awards, tore down and packed up! I want to thank everyone for coming out and for lending a helping hand with setting up and tearing down!

A special thanks goes to all women who even though they didn’t participate, all helped with tallying the scores, prepping the awards, the pictures and clean up! Thanks Ladies!!

BCSA 10/3/2015 Match Report

Well another match and another season is in the books!

This match almost didn’t happen due to the varying weather reports all week. At the beginning of the week, the forecast for Match day was partly sunny with only a 20 percent chance of rain. As the week wore on the forecast went up to a 70 percent chance of rain, down to a 30 percent chance and all points in between! Oh the joys of a Match Director! Friday morning the percentage of rain leveled out to around 30 percent so I sent out an email saying MATCH ON and that any brave souls that wanted to chance it were more than welcome to join me!! After the match was setup Friday afternoon, I again looked at the weather forecast and the percentage jumped back up to 60!! Oh this is going to be fun!

12 brave souls were on hand to press their luck with Mother Nature! When my wife and I arrived at the range at 6:45am to pull the strings and check the targets it was bone dry! After that it was a constant light rain for the rest of the match! Oh, and did I mention there was a light breeze and that the temps stayed in the low 40’s!! What a great Fall day for a Field Target Match!!

Today's Weather

10-3-2015 Weather photo 10-3-15 Weather_zpsoghyq4fd.jpg

Art Deuel and his wife Issy were the first to arrive and lent us a hand in setting up the sight-in range. Once that was set the people started rolling in! Ok, either we’re all NUTS or we’re diehards that aren’t afraid of a little rain and we didn’t want to be cooped up in the house all day!

Sight-in

Sighting in photo IMG_3095_zpslshaeesb.jpg

The match was shot under our covered range which was definitely a big help in keeping ouselves and our equipment dry! Yes, some of the water rolling off the canopies drip on the rifles, but it was definitely better than being out in the open!

The covered range

Down the covered line photo IMG_3116_zpsbiydnizj.jpg

There were 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match. The average yardage was 32.1 yards with a difficulty of 31.5T. There was 1 standing lane and 1 kneeling lane. For some reason, the Match Director thought it would be ok that they were back to back! The match went off without a hitch. No cold lines and no protested targets! That’s always a good thing!

Some targets

A few targets photo IMG_3117_zpsnvckpeta.jpg

We did have 1 new shooter on hand and also a husband and wife team show up to observe. Nic Gregoris (our former Junior) brought along a buddy of his, Sascha. Sascha shot Jr Hunter Piston under the watchful eye of his bud Nic. I think Sascha had a great time and that we’ll see more of him next season! Marty and Mary Ellen Johnson came down to check things out and get some more pointers before participating in their first match. Marty’s got the equipment and the look in his eye but still has to get setup. I’m sure we’ll see him and Mary Ellen on the line before to long.

Sascha

Thanks to everyone for jumping in and helping out with tearing the stuff down in the rain!

Good luck to all those going to the Nationals!

Thanks to all that came out in 2015 to make it another successful season! Have a GREAT off season and we’ll see you in the spring!

Now on to the results!
