BCSA 4/20/2013 Field Target Match Report

What a Fantastic day for our first match of the season....................not!!!

The weather forecast for the match was a high of 47 degrees with winds between 15-20mph with higher gusts! It didn't dissappoint! What should have been a rifle match difficulty of 27T was bumped up to more of a 34T while the 17T pistol match increased to a 21T. If I could find the multipliers for body chills and numb fingers, pretty sure it would have been a little higher!

We had 9 brave souls in attendance for the rifle match, which Included a first time Jr. shooter, Nicolas G. He was on hand to have a go at his first FT match. He was squadded with Dave L. Dave met Nicolas at the clubs JR. rifle program and started to dangle the bait. I think after today the hook may be set!

It felt more like an early winter day rather than a mid spring day! The wind was as forecast if not slightly higher. It was suprising that there were no tangled strings! It was rather challenging to think you were holding off enough when just as you squeezed the trigger a big gust would come and blow your pellet out of the KZ. If it wasn't for the temperatures in the low 30's due to the windchill it would have been an awesome time. Kind of hard to stand or hold still with your teeth chattering the way they were! You can definitely tell by the pictures that it wasn't your normal Spring day!

The rifle scores were pretty close given the brutal conditions. One thing to note is that Hans A. who was shooting Open PCP (and also was match high!) and Tom W. who was shooting Hunter PCP were both shooting at sub 12 ft-lbs. Definitely challenging to determine the correct hold off at that power level and with the winds the way they were.

After the rifle match, we took a short break to re-arrange a few targets before shooting the pistol match. And in case you were wondering, no the wind definitely didn't let up for that! We had 4 pistol shooters and 2 standing rifle shooters for the pistol match. Even though the targets were a lot closer, the scores didn't improve much from the rifle match due to........yes.......the wind!

Thanks to everyone for helping with the rifle to pistol switch and especially for helping with the teardown! Many hands make fast work! Our next match will be on May 11th. Now on to the reuslts!

CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN!

BCSA 6/8/2013 Field Target Match Report

Well this season hasn't been off to a great start! First match of the year felt more like a mid- winter match, second match of the season was cancelled due to rain and this match was in jeopardy due to the remnants of tropical storm Andrea! Well, the storm moved well east of us and the match was a go! We had a little bit of drizzle during sight-in and another little shot around mid morning. The remainder of the time we just dealt with low to mid 60's and high humidity. There was a little bit of wind around but nothing major. It did make this a little interesting though for the lower power shooters.

Shooters started rolling in right around 8am, just in time for sight in. As people were getting their equipment and heading to the sight-in range, 1 shooter noticed that he didn't pack the right gun! Luckily he was able to use his backup for the match. Definitely not his first choice, but it worked! After sight-in, we headed over to our FT range. We had a brief announcement period and shooters meeting then the match began.

We had 14 shooters for the rifle match, so we used 2 man squads. Junior Nicolas G. made a returning trip to the range. Nic's scores for the match were based on 2 points for a knockdown, 1 point for a faceplate hit and 0 for a miss. He ended up with a 73/120. Very good shooting! NY Upstater's Joe B., George F. and Todd B. and SE PA residents Rich B. and Jim W. all made their first trip of the season to the range. Welcome back guys! We used 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane which made up a 60 shot match. One lane was a forced standing lane and another was a forced kneeling lane. The difficulty for the match was a 28.5T, but if I was to add the darkness factor in due to the overcast skies which created quite a few shadows, the rating was in reality a little higher. Unfortunately the wind machine was on the fritz which didn't add to the difficulty at all. The rifle portion went off without a hitch, no cold lines! As with our last match, the scores were pretty close to each other. Guess I need to up the number of reducers!

The rifle match, due to our set-up moved along rather quickly! When it was over, we took a short break, packed away our rifles and broke out our pistols! Boy there are a lot of 1720T's listed in the equipment section! After re-positioning a couple of the targets, the pistol match was underway. 2 rifle shooters opted not to shoot pistol, so we had 12 shooters for the match. 3 open pistol shooters, 1 off hand rifle shooter and the rest shooting hunter pistol. For the pistol match we used 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane for a 40 shot pistol match. The difficulty for the pistol match was around 17T. Only a couple of the targets could have received a darkness difficulty factor due to the shorter distances. Again, no cold lines! Nice when everything works as it's supposed to!

Thanks to everyone for coming out and especially for helping with the teardown and packing up! It is greatly appreciated! Hope you all had a great time! Our next match will be the AAFTA Grand Prix Event - The Cross Catskills Challenge on August 3rd and 4th! Hope to see you there!

Now on to the results!

BCSA 9/7/2013 Field Target Match Report

What a great day for a match! The temperatures started off a bit cool (low 50's), but warmed up to the low 70's by the time we were finished! The breeze was very light which was also a bonus! If only every day could be like this! When we arrived at the club, Art and his trusty motorcycle were waiting for us at the gate! Art lent a hand and helped with pulling all the strings and setting up the sight in range. Thank You Art!!

We had 16 shooters for this match which included a first time shooter (Doug D.) along with 3 junior shooters (Lydia D., Shannon C. & Nic G.). Lydia & Nic shot Hunter PCP while Shannon shot Open PCP. All 3 are 14 years old. It's great to see new people enter the sport!

Unfortunately the match didn't go off without a hitch. Lydia's new Marauder was acting a bit unruly during sight in, so she shared her dad Tim's Marauder with a 3-9 scope on it to compete in the match. After the rifle match was complete, Hans worked his magic and got her gun whipped in to shape. Thank You Hans!! I'm sure she'll be already to go next time. Doug is awaiting his scope to arrive to put on his brand new TX, so he was gun-less for the match. Art D. stepped up and lent Doug his TX to use and also helped him through his first match. Thank You again Art! Boy the willingness to help others in this sport is awesome!

We had a couple of targets that started misbehaving about the middle of the match and 1 string that came apart near the beginning. Other than that, the rifle match progressed rather smoothly.

After the rifle match, awards were handed out and we raffled off a few swinger targets and a $$ gift donated by Dave L. Hans & Shannon were the winners of the swinger targets while Craig walked away with the $$. Definitely helps cover the cost of tolls and gas to come and compete. After a brief break for reseting the course, the pistol match was started. 8 shooters partook in the event. Again, Murphys Law, we had another unruly target! Worked perfectly duirng the rilfe match, but what are you gonna do, things happen. Other than that one issue, the pistol match moved along quite quickly.

After the pistol match was completed we handed out the awards and tore everything down. Thanks to all that helped with the clean up!! Many hands make fast work and it is greatly appreciated!

BCSA 10/5/2013 Field Target Match Report

A very chilly fall like day for a field target match! The temperature upon arrival was right around 24 degrees! NO. wait a second.....that was what it was like last year! The weather for this match was more like a mid summers day. The day was overcast with only the tiniest bit of a breeze. Temperatures started in the low 60's and rose to the low 70's. What made it feel like summer was the high humidity throughout the day! Definitely a sticky day!

Kevin - 2012

Kevin - 2013

We had a very good turnout with 21 shooters coming out to enjoy the day for our last match of the 2013 season. It makes everything right when after all the match prep cars and shooters roll in from all over! Art Deuel was the first to arrive and jumped right in giving my wife Pat and I a hand pulling strings and setting up the sight in range.

After the sight in portion and the normal pre match chit chat, that range was cleaned up and we headed over to the field target range. The course was set to a 28.7T difficulty and included a standing and a kneeling lane. We use 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match. We had a brief shooters meeting and the match was underway. The rifle portion of the match went off without a hitch....... well except for our bird in the well target that decided to give Harold Schaefer a little problem. Harold was the last shooter to shoot that lane and the swivel decided to get stuck on the wood in front of the well and hold up the target and not let it fall. Well, that was a new issue that will surely never happen again!

Two of our Junior shooters, both 14 years old, were back to battle it out for the Junior title. This time is was a reversal from the last match with Nic Gregoris winning over Lydia Durant. So far, they have each won one. Guess we will have to wait till next year to see how this plays out!

Once the rifle match was over, I brought out some Birthday cake! There are a bunch of us that celebrate our Birthday's in October, plus there is never a bad excuse to have cake!

October Birthday Group

After everyone got their sugar fix, we awarded the winners and reset the range for the pistol/offhand/whatever match. Here is the group of shooters on hand for the day:

Match Participants

18 of the Shooters stayed to participate in the pistol match. 2 Shot Open pistol, 8 shot Hunter pistol and the rest of us shot all different ways. The course was set up with the same 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. A half a dozen targets were adjusted to bring them into pistol range. The pistol shooters were shooting the 2 closest targets (for a 40 shot match) and all the rest off us were shooting whichever targets we wanted to. Awards were only given to the pistol shooters so the rest of us were just shooting for fun, practice or just trying something different. Of the non-pistol shooters, Jerry, Hans, Nathan and Ray shot standing, Hector and Veronika shot either standing or kneeling, Tom Wade went through the revamped course shooting hunter and I opted to give WFTF a shot. Again, no target issues!

After the pistol match, awards were handed out and everyone jumped in to lend a helping hand with tear down! All the help the shooters have provided this season has been greatly appreciated! It definitely makes putting on these matches worthwhile. Thanks to all of you!!!

Now on to a few random pictures, the course layouts and the results results! Thanks again to everyone and we'll see you in 2014!!!
