BCSA May 12th, 2018 Match Report
Oooopppps I mean BCSA May 13th Match Report! Yep, again, rain 80% to 100% of an all day rain was forecast for Match day! I sent out a few emails earlier in the week wondering how people felt about rescheduling for Sunday………..YES, Mothers Day! Finally!!! I had a few responses that said they were in, so I waited till Friday before making the final call. Yep, match cancelled for Saturday, but on for Sunday!
We had 17 participants with 18 scores for our rescheduled match! Brian VanLiew shot both WFTF PCP and Open PCP. An excellent turnout for a non-scheduled match!
The weather for the day was overcast with a slight wind that would creep up on you from time to time! Dennis Himes commented on how the wind was blowing 1 way on the sight-in range and blowing totally opposite on the FT range even though they both face the same direction! Wish I could say I planned it that way!
The match was underway just a little after 9am and after about 3 hours it was over! The particulars for the match were 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane which gave us a 60 shot match. Besides the normal freestyle lanes, there was 1 Standing lane and 1 Kneeling lane. The average yardage for the day was 36.12 yards. We had 16 targets beyond 40 yards, with 7 of those being beyond 50 yards! The difficulty was 35.11 with no environmental factors applied. There were plenty of compliments about the layout and it being a tough match, but not so difficult that it felt like any of the targets were undo-able!
At the conclusion of the rifle match, Jerry LaRocca & Ray Apelles were tied with scores of 44 in WFTF Piston. The shoot-off commenced. First target up was a 1” target at what was 41 yards, BUT they chose to shoot it from a couple of lanes over which made it about 47 yards+. Both missed…..then both hit..on to the next. The next target was an 1.5” target at 42.5 yards Standing. After going shot for shot for almost a half a dozen times, both decided to call it a tie for the day!
After a brief break and the presenting of the rifle awards, the pistol match was started.
We had 6 pistol shooters with all but 1 shooting Hunter Pistol. Nathan Thomas was the lone limited Pistol shooter for the day!. Another note about the pistol match, Brian VanLiew shot pistol after having just shot 2 rifles during the rifle match! 160 shots on target for the day!
The only cold line for the day was at the start of the pistol match when one of the strings “magically” broke a few feet in front of the target. A quick fix and all was well!
The pistol match came to an end and everyone immediately jumped in and started packing away the targets! Boy do things cleanup quick with many hands!
I want to thank everyone for coming out and spending the day at BCSA (on Mothers Day) for this re-scheduled match! Hopefully this won’t be a sign of what the weather pattern for the summer will be like!

Saturday June 9
BCSA June 9th, 2018 Match Report
We finally got a break in the weather….well we did have a scare midweek when all the forecasts were calling for up to a 90% chance of rain for match day! There was talk about possibly making it a Sunday match, but all the bad weather moved South and it was match on! The day turned out great except a little bit more of a breeze would have made the tough course a little more interesting! Temperatures started out in the low 50’s and rose to a comfortable 72 by match end! The wind was light with just a couple of little breezes now and then.
20 shooters descended on the range in little ol Binghamton New York to join us for our monthly match! Long distance award goes to Bill Day who traveled around 7 hours one way to join us! There were actually 6 states represented for the match! Besides us from NY, there were shooters from PA, NJ, ME, CT & MA! Leo Gonzales (CT) brought along first time to our range shooters John Eroh (MA) and Vasyl Povroznyk (CT)…..Thanks to all that travelled near and FAR!!
The match was underway just a little after 9am and after about 3 hours it was over! The particulars for the match were 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane which gave us a 60 shot match. Besides the normal freestyle lanes, there was 1 Standing lane and 1 Kneeling lane. The average yardage for the day was 36.20 yards. We had 16 targets beyond 40 yards with 8 of those being beyond 50 yards! The other 8 target were between 40 & 45 yards, of those, only 2 of them were 1 1/2”! The difficulty was 35.69 with no environmental factors applied. There were actually quite a few targets that I should have applied the extreme dark factor to since the evil Match Director had placed a bunch of dark colored targets in some pretty dark places! Note to self…..lighten up the paint jobs a little when all the leaves are out!!!
Even though the course difficulty was on the upper end of the scale, Tom Himes (PA) managed a Match High score of 52 with his newly acquired Daystate Red Wolf!
Tom just edged out his Brother Dennis who shot a 51 (also with a newly acquired Daystate Red Wolf) and Brian VanLiew (NJ) who also shot a 51……good shooting guys!!
We had 1 cold line during the rifle match. Louis Hopewell (NY) shot a target and the reducer fell off. Match Director error! The spring on the Pounded Paddle reducer just needed to be bent a little tighter. A quick fix and the rest of the rifle match went off without another issue!
After a brief break and the presenting of the rifle awards, the pistol match was started.
We had 7 pistol shooters with all shooting Hunter Pistol. There was also 4 shooters that shot off hand with their rifles and Sean McDaniel (NY) shot his rifle in different positions for practice!
Yep, just 1 more cold line during the pistol match. Yep, it was Louis again! This time it was a target linkage issue that wasn’t a quick fix, so the target was pulled from the Match and points were awarded to all
Once the pistol match came to an end everyone immediately jumped in and started packing away the targets, strings and canopies! Thanks to all for the help!! It is GREATLY appreciated!
I want to thank everyone for coming out and spending the day at BCSA!

Saturday August 11
BCSA August 11th, 2018 Match Report
Well……Here we go again!! The forecast for Match day changed quite a few times throughout the prior week. The forecast went from bad to worse to great to bad to worse! Yep…it was gonna be an all day rain! My wife Pat and I talked it over as to whether we should cancel, but decided to go for it and see what would happen. Pat, Dave Lee and myself did the setup on Friday afternoon so we were ready to go come Saturday. I sent out an email warning the competitors of the possibility of a wet day and said it was up to them if they wanted to attend. I also told them if they wanted to attend that we’d be there for them.
Saturday came and there was a moderate rain, so off to the course we went. We pulled all the strings than my wife and I figured we’d sit and watch the rain before setting out the sight-in targets. Wouldn’t you know after a little bit of time people started arriving! Then they kept arriving! And kept arriving! We ended up with 22 competitors for the day! What a turnout for what was a not so pleasant day. I’m pretty sure they all know we would have the canopies set-up so they decided to chance it!
Below are the weather stats for the match. The rifle match started at around 9:15am and ended a little after noon. The pistol match ended about 2:15pm…….yep, just over a half inch of rain for the match:
Of the 22 rifle shooters, Mike Harris, Rick Vaeth and Shawn Pragle made their first trips to BCSA……Welcome! We also had 3 women on the line today, Betsy Dunlap, Sue Burley and Rosalie Paulsen! There was 1 cold line that was a string tangle where the string got wrapped around the base of the target. With all the rain that took place, I was pleased that the string issue was the only problem!
Of our 3 WFTF Piston shooters for the day, Ray Apelles and Nathan Thomas shot the entire course either kneeling or standing! The easiest target on the forced standing lane was a 47T and by the looks of how the rest of us did on that lane, we probably all could have used that kind of practice!
After the conclusion of the rifle match, Pat and Janet Manktelow tallied all the results while Betsy Dunlap brought out a cake to celebrate Doug Dunlap’s upcoming 70th Birthday! Match High for the day Sean McDaniel led everyone in a chorus of “Happy Birthday to You”. After a quick sugar injection, we handed out the rifle awards and got the pistol match started!
4 people shot the pistol match while 6 of us sat around and shot something else! At the conclusion of the pistol match we had a tie for first place between Eric Brewer and Nic Gregoris for 1st place in Hunter Pistol! Each took a shot at a 1.5 inch target at 31 yards and both knocked it down. I then had them shoot at 1 of the rifle targets that was a 0.5 inch KZ at 19.3 yards……a 60.8T target for pistol. Eric knocked it down on the first shot but Nic was unable to match Eric and ended up settling for second place.
The awards were handed out and the remaining people jumped in and helped with the teardown. Thanks ALL!!!

Saturday September 8
BCSA September 8th, 2018 Match Report
3 days after our last match, this happened!
Yep, the creek decided it had enough of flowing where it was and decided to take a new path! The club’s ground crew were on it…..repair made…….and we were back in business…..well, at least for now since they are forecasting up to 3” of rain over the next 24-36 hours!
The early forecast for this month’s match was looking pretty good……….and when match day came…….it didn’t disappoint! The day was overcast with temperatures starting out in the mid 50’s and rose to the mid 60’s. There was a slight breeze that arose from time to time which made the participants for the day second guess their holds prior to releasing the shot! Definitely a welcomed day after all the heat and humidity we’ve been dealing with lately. I even decided to leave the canopies off so that we could enjoy the weather!
28 people were on hand for the match…what a great turnout! Miles Howard and Jeff Little made their first trips to BSCA….welcome!! Also on hand were the statisticians, my wife Pat and Paul’s wife Janet…..Thanks for all the record keeping!
My wife and I had things ready to go by the time the first competitors for the day arrived. Sight-in commenced just before 8:00am and ended around 9:10am. We all then made our way over to the range to start the days activities! The course of fire for the day was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. There was one standing lane with target difficulties of 46.7T, 45.5T & 45.5T and one kneeling lane with difficulties of 43.2T, 42.8T and 30.0T (no environmental factors added). The course difficulty for the day was a 35.7T with 15 of the 30 targets being over 40 yards………nope………they all weren’t full sized as the competitors for the day can attest to! The rifle match went on without a hitch……no cold lines and no protests!
Ray Apelles opted to shoot the entire match off hand to get some practice in. The difficulty for doing that ended up being a 55.0T. 14 of the targets (shooting standing) were above 60T, with 3 of those being over 70T!
Match high for the day was shared by Brian Van Liew and Dennis Himes, both with impressive 53’s! From my understanding, Jeff Little missed his final shot and ended up with a 52. There could have been a 3-way tie for match high and a Hunter PCP shoot-off! We did end up with a shoot-off for 3rd place in WFTF PCP between Mike Harris and Glenn Thomas. The target that was chosen was a 1” KZ at 43.5 yards. Each missed on their first shots and Mike was able to connect on his second shot giving him 3rd place.
After the conclusion of the rifle match, awards were presented and strings were pulled to get ready for the pistol match. There was also plenty of can I try this or that going on. We are always on the lookout for the next best thing!
The pistol match consisted of 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane. There was 1 standing lane with the following difficulties, 46.9T and 29.4T. Guess it didn’t bother Nic Gregoris or Craig Evans since both of them came out with 3 out of 4 for that lane!
There was 1 cold line due to a string break, but a quick fix and all was back on track. Nic ended up with a 34 out of 40 to distance himself from the rest of the field and lock down a first place win!
At the conclusion of the pistol match, the awards were handed out and the remaining people jumped in and helped with the teardown. Thanks ALL!!!

Saturday October 13
BCSA October 13th, 2018 Match Report
The early forecast for this month’s match (our last match of 2018) was looking pretty good……BUT…..as match day got closer, the forecast got worse. 4 of the major websites said the rain would clear out by around 9:00am so I decided to delay the match for 1 hour so we could stay dry………Nope….that didn’t happen! We had light rain through most of the match with a few breaks of sunshine. The wind was present and variable with windspeeds in the 5 - 8 mph range. Oh, and the temperature NEVER broke 50 degrees! A far cry from the upper 80’s we had at the Nationals just last week in North Carolina!
My wife Pat and I arrived early to get things finished up. We pulled the strings in the rain and kept wondering why we were doing this. Shortly after the course was set we went to set up the sight-in range. Louis Hopewell was the first to arrive and lent us a hand finishing that up. The competitors for the day started to arrive. We ended up with 12 brave souls for the day that were gonna shoot no matter what Mother Nature had in store.
Hector Medina surprised us by joining us for the day and he even brought along a few spectators! They were in the area and he “heard there was a Field Target Match”. It was great to see Veronika after such a long hiatus and also meet the kids! Hector chose to shoot Hunter Piston and I chose to shoot WFTF PCP…….just a little switcheroo!
While we were sighting-in under the cover of our 100 yard rifle range, I kept watching the rain to see if it was going to give us a break so we could make our way to the Field Target range. I ran sight-in a little long then we made the trek over to start the match.
For this month’s match, Pat and I just randomly placed the targets without measuring them. It was going to be interesting to see how we did. We had 6 groups of 2. The squads were Hans Apelles and Rosalie Paulsen, Brian Vanliew and Glenn Thomas, Dave Lee and Nic Gregoris, Paul Manktelow and Hector Medina, Craig Evans and Louis Hopewell and finally Nathan Thomas and I were paired up as we were at the Nationals. Both Hector and I used our range finders and ranged the targets after we shot in order to determine the course difficulty for the day. We didn’t do too bad with our random setup, We had 15 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards and with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane we ended up with a 35.54T.
The match went on without a single issue. I was worried with all the rain we had over night that there might be a few issues, but no cold lines! Now, the only problem we did have was that Nathan and I concluded that we should never be squadded together again!! Shooting together doesn’t help our score!
As we finished up the 10 lane 60 shot match, the competitors for the day handed their cards in to Pat and Paul’s wife Janet…..Thank you ladies for all the record keeping! After all the scores were checked and finalized, we handed out the awards. The pistol match was to commence after the awards, BUT, after the cold day we were dealing with many decided to head for home and some warmth so the match was nixed. There were a few of us that re-shot the rifle targets with different equipment just for fun and Paul Manktelow brought out his new acquisition that he won at the Nationals to show and shoot. Nathan shot my EV2 and just kept shaking his head at how much easier it was to shoot than his LGU. Nic shot a HW97 playing around in WFTF Piston and I shot my TM1000 testing it and the newly mounted Hawke FFP scope I got. Brian and Glenn took some shots with the different equipment also. It was just a nice little plinking session to end the season!
At the conclusion of the pistol match……I mean plinking session, the remaining people jumped in and helped with the teardown. Thanks ALL!!!
Thanks to all that came out to BCSA this year to make it a great season! Hope to see you and many more new/old faces in 2019!
