BCSA 5/12/2012 Field Target Match Report

What a nice day for a field target match! After last month's mis-forecast by the weather guru's, the bright skies for this month's match were a welcomed sight. The morning started out in the upper 30's with a little bit of fog and little to no wind. As the morning progressed, the temperatures started to rise and the sun burned through the fog. By the end of the match, the temperatures rose to near 80 degrees and the wind was around 10mph.

We had nine shooters on hand for the match, and the bucket brigade was well represented! There were a couple more shooters that had planned on showing up, but had to sit this one out at the last minute due to various illnesses. We hope they all get better soon.

This match was a trial run of sorts. I pre-planned a 60 shot rifle match followed by a 40 shot pistol match. For the rifle portion, there were 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. The shooting order was 1 shot on the left target, 1 shot on the middle target, 1 shot on the right target then repeat for a total of 6 shots per lane. Timers were used and the allotted time was 6 minutes per lane. Before the start of the match, I asked the shooters to keep track of the time they had remaining on the clock in order to see how this worked out. There was only 1 person who timed out on 1 of the lanes. Everyone else had well over a minute or more left on the clock, and nobody said the felt rushed. With our layout and running 2 man squads, we finished the 60 shot rifle match in about 2 hours.

At the conclusion of the rifle match, awards were handed out, we took a little break and a few targets were removed so that the pistol match could begin.

This was our first pistol match at the club, but definitely won't be the last. There are a few of us that would welcome more trigger time with our pistols! We have opted to run just 2 classes for awards at our club, a hunter pistol class and an open pistol class. Shooters are also allowed to shoot the pistol portion offhand with their rifles if they so desire, but there are no awards for this, only practice.

For the pistol match, there were 2 targets per lane with a time limit of 4 minutes. Again, things were mixed up again, and the shooting order was 1 shot on the left target, 1 shot on the right target, then repeat for a total of 4 shots per lane. Not one shooter timed out, and again, no one felt rushed. We ended up finishing the pistol portion in about an hour and a half.

All the feedback on our trial run was positive and we will continue to run this format for future matches.

Again, a great day for a field target match!!

BCSA 6/9/2012 Field Target Match Report

The weather forecast for this month's match was not too pleasant. The chance of showers and thunderstorms was 80%. Not bad considering at the beginning of the week there was only supposed to be a 10% chance for match day.

Luckily the weather forecasters were wrong again and it wasn't too bad of a day. We did have a few sprinkles and just a little bit of moderate rain on occasion, but definitely nothing like the forecast. The winds remained mostly calm throughout the entire match.

We had a longtime air gunner, but newcomer to the sport of field target show up and shoot his first FT match ever. Welcome aboard Kevin! We hope you enjoyed yourself and will attend again. Also, Jim W. (from FTRPA) made his first trip up to our range. We too hope he enjoyed our set-up and our company!

As has been the case lately, most everyone shot the rifle portion of our match in the AAFTA Hunter Division, except for Tom H, who was our lone WFTF competitor. The rifle portion was run shooting 1 shot per target in left middle right order then repeated. We had 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match. There was only 1 forced position lane which was an offhand lane. The time limit per lane was 6 minutes, and as with last month, no one came close to timing out. We will continue to use this format, as it adds a little twist to the match. Re-adjusting and range finding 6 times per lane makes for a little bit of a challenge. The first place award in the hunter division went to Kevin K. Not bad for his first match and shooting at 12x without a mil-dot scope!

After the rifle match, awards were handed out, a little break was taken and a few targets were repositioned for our pistol match. All the shooters, except Tom H. shot in the hunter class. Tom opted to get in some practice, and shot the pistol match offhand with his rifle. Pistol field target is something new to most of our shooters, and everyone is still working on setting up their equipment for it. Besides Dave L. & George F., I think the rest of us need to determine what is going to work best for us both for comfort & stability, as well as optic wise.

For the pistol match we shot the same left right then repeat format with 4 minutes per lane. Again, no one came close to timing out. We used our 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane for a 40 shot match. George did well with his new PRB CZ200 Pistol. Jim W was just going to observe, but I paired up with him and shared my Marauder custom pistol with him. Dave shot great with his newly customized stock on his FN8. Tom W is rethinking his optic choices and I am still trying to find a steady hold. George was the first place prize winner in the hunter class pistol.

As always, thanks to all the participants that braved the forecast and came out to enjoy the day! We missed a few of our regulars due to prior commitments and unexpected circumstances. Remember, new shooters are always welcomed. We have loaner equipment and helpful individuals that will make your first FT match enjoyable.

BCSA 6/23/2012 Field Target Match Report

This match was an unscheduled match that was thrown together over the last 2 weeks. After dealing with temperatures in the upper 90's and high humidity for the last 4 days, today's weather was a welcome sight. Temperatures started off in the low 60's and ended right around 81 degrees. There was plenty of sunshine and light breeze that turned a bit gusty at the most inopportune times.

After our June 3rd match, I started asking the shooters if they wanted one more practice match before the NRFTC at Crosman since there wasn't anything locally scheduled. I started to get yes responses shortly after I asked, so we went ahead and set the date. We ended up with 13 shooters for the day. Not a bad turnout for a thrown together last minute match! We saw a familiar face make his first trip to our range as well as a few shooters make their first trip up this year due to other conflicts in previous matches.

This match was totally setup by the shooters. I brought the targets and they set up the lanes. We started the setup around 8am and were ready to sight in by 8:20am. Boy do things go fast with quite a few hands! We ended our sight in around 9 am and were ready to start the match. What was surprising was with everyone randomly setting targets how much of a balance there ended up being. There was one shooter that thought it would be a challenge if he set up 3 targets in a row, 1 right behind the other with the last behind them. He thought that you would have to knock down the first to get to the second to get to the third. Good thought, but for us hunter guys, we could actually see all 3 killzones clearly from our position. Good try Ray!

After the 60 shot rifle match, we took a little break and again randomly set the targets in preparation for our 40 shot pistol match. Again, things came out pretty well balanced. There was a variety of shooting positions that were chosen. We had 3 shooters shooting open pistol, 5 shooting hunter pistol and 1 shooter shooting hands only. The 3 other shooters opted to shoot the pistol portion with their rifles offhand for practice.

As always, thanks to all the participants that came out to enjoy the day! And a BIG thanks for the help with the set-up and teardown, it is greatly appreciated! Remember, new shooters are always welcomed. We have loaner equipment and helpful individuals that will make your first FT match enjoyable.

Saturday August 11

BCSA 8/11/2012 Field Target Match Report

Well, what was supposed to be an iffy day turned out to be a very decent one! The weather forecast for our area was calling for a good chance of rain for both Friday and Saturday. We got the course setup Friday after the rain had slowed down, but left the rest of the setup for early Saturday morning. The canopies were put up, the sight in targets were set and the strings were pulled prior to our normal sight in time. As shooters arrived, they pitched in and things went pretty quickly. Due to all the moisture, it was quite sticky during the final setup preparations. Hans A. brought along a few of his novelty targets so that shooters had something else besides paper to shoot at during sight in. Thanks Hans!!

We had a very good turnout with 18 shooters on hand for the match. Of the 18, there were 2 newer shooters to the sport! Tim D. (first timer) and Lydia D. were there to give FT a try. Lydia and Tim were at the Baldwinsville show and shoot a few weeks back where BCSA hosted a field target event. Lydia did participate in the field target match as part of her 4 event rotation. She was only shooting targets out to 30 yards there, this time it was the full FT experience. Tim enjoyed watching Lydia shoot at Baldwinsville, so thought he'd bring his daughter down and also give it a try himself. The hook has been set, now we just need to reel him in!!! Next we'll work on her mother and her cousin!! Also on hand were Kevin K. and Art D. (both from PA.) fresh off their East Coast Benchrest Regional shoot last weekend! The rest of the shooters were from PA, CT, the NYC area, the central/upstate NY region as well as us locals from the southern tier of NY. Boy do we love to travel to shoot our air rifles!

We had our usual high attendance in hunter class along with a handful of others that shot open and WFTF. As I did last year at this time, I made the rifle course a little more difficult than usual but not too bad (31.3T). Hector and Veronika were on hand for one last practice round before they head off to Norway so I setup 1 more good practice session for them, I hope! I ran our usual 10 lanes with 3 targets/ 6 minutes per lane with 2 forced position lanes, 1 standing and 1 kneeling for a 60 shot match. The shooting order format we use is 1 shot on the left target, 1 shot on the middle target, 1 shot on the right target then repeat. This forces the shooter to rangefind 6 times per lane. So far it's been working out with no complaints. There were however quite a few grumblings about the amount of reducers that were used, but it was pretty much decided that the hole sizes were not to blame for the misses.

The weather starting clearing up and becoming a little less humid throughout the match. The only thing missing were the wind gusts that didn't appear until the pistol match.

12 shooters shot the pistol portion of the match, again with most opting for hunter class. Hector and Veronika also shot it through with their rifles for additional practice. They alternated between standing, kneeling and sitting shots. The closer rifle targets are used for the pistol match, but the long targets were left out so that they also had those to shoot. The format for the pistol match is 2 targets / 4 minutes per lane for a 40 shot match. The targets are shot in L, R, L, R order similar to the rifle portion. Again, this adds just a little bit of thinking and slight twist to the usual format we shoot.

Thanks to all that came out and also a thank you for all the help with the setup and teardown! We would like to also wish the best of luck to Hector, Veronika and the rest of the shooters going to the Worlds to represent the USA! Now on to the results.

Saturday September 8

BCSA 9/8/2012 Field Target Match Report

Well, seems like September is not a pleasant time in the southern tier of NY!! Last year on this date, our area was still waiting for the waters to subside do to the remnants of tropical storm Lee which caused severe flooding in the area. This year for match day we had a forecast of 90 percent chance of severe thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds! Oh what a great day for a field target match! The week started off with the forecast for match day showing only a 20 percent chance of rain. As the week progressed the chance went up to 70 percent and things were starting to lean more towards the 90 percent chance after noon. Match on!

The targets and canopies were set up Friday afternoon. This is what greeted us when my wife and I arrived to pull the strings and set up the sight in targets:

Visitor
Visitor

Hmmmmmmmmm........ live field targets! The pair actually returned to check things out just before our sight in started. Once they were off to the side, the first shot at the targets sent them back into the woods.

Despite the weather, 13 shooters were on hand to take on mother nature! The shooters were from Central NY, Central and North Eastern PA, CT, Downstate NY and 3 of us locals thrown into the mix. Tim and his daughter, our lone junior shooter, Lydia D. were on hand for their second ever field target match. They have both been shooting hunter style, but next time we'll get Lydia to try either open or WFTF! We'll keep giving them different options and let them decide which positions they like the best before they purchase new equipment.

The weather turned out to be pretty decent throughout the rifle match with decent temperatures, lower than expected humidity and quite a lot of wind to contend with! You can see in some of the pictures (link below) that the wind was going every which way. Sometimes you would take your first shot with the wind flag straight left, then by the time you took your second shot the wind flag would be straight right. This doesn't include our ever changing wind that happens between the muzzle and the target. Oh did that add to the difficulty! The course was set a little on the hard side (32T) due to the fact that there were 5 shooters on hand that are going to the Nationals in Oregon at the end of the month and I wanted to give them 1 more good practice match. If you take the winds in to account the course actually turned out to be a 40T. Hopefully this practice helped!

During the rifle match, I was constantly checking the weather maps to see how close the storms were. I had previously determined that there would probably be no pistol match. Turned out to be the right call! After the rifle match, awards were handed out and we starting tearing the course down. Everyone pitched in with the cleanup and things moved along rather quickly. Everyone packed up and headed home dry! About 15 minutes up the road I ran into the rain. I know the east bounders should have stayed dry, and hope everyone else did too!

Again, thank you all for coming out and helping with the tear down, it is greatly appreciated! Hope to see you all and the ones that couldn't make it to this match come out for our last match for the year on October 13th.

Now on to the pictures and the results!

BCSA 10/13/2012 Field Target Match Report

A very chilly fall like day for a field target match! We arrived to do the final setup and found Art D. patiently waiting at the gate to give us a hand. The temperature upon arrival was right around 24 degrees! Great Day for a match! So cold in fact that the cameras on hand decided to act up throughout the day. I took some with the cell phone as backup and uploaded them in real time through Instagram. Very impressed how that worked out! Twitter Link Here

We had a very good turnout with 15 shooters coming out to enjoy the day and our last match of the 2012 season. Among the shooters, we had a few first timers to our range. Paul M. came down from the Rochester area and Todd B. and Rick I. were on hand from the Salem NY area. Joe B. took a break from all his other activiites and made a return to the field target range.

Paul M.

Dave L. and Rick I.

Todd B. and Joe B.

We started our rifle match a few minutes later than normal due to the cold temperatures. After the sight in targets were pulled and the targets were worked a little to free the frost we were under way. The rifle match consisted of 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a total of 60 shots. The target order for the match again was 1 shot left target, 1 shot middle target, 1 shot right target then repeat. Plenty of Hunter shooters for this match, but a few shooters decided to change things up. Jerry L. switched things up and shot WFTF Piston with his TX, while Hans A. put back on the Leupold 35x, dropped the power on his Marauder Hybrid to under 12 ft-lbs and got off the bucket and back down on the ground to shoot Open PCP. The only cold line called was to replace a leader on one of the targets that was shot off. This little delay allowed the shooters to run out in the sun and warm up a little. The temperatures never really got above 45 degrees for the rifle match, and when the sun did come out the wind started to pick up which really didn't help with feeling any warmer.

Jerry L.

Hans A.

Veronika and Hector ended the rifle match in a tie for second with scores of 30. SHOOTOFF!! I had them shoot at a 1 1/2" target at 52 yards. After a few back and forths Veronika came out victorious over the reigning National champion. Congrats Veronika!!

Veronika R.

Hector M.

After the conclusion of the rifle match, we presented the awards, took a little break and prepared the targets for the pistol match. I had laid out the target positions for the pistol match and marked the locations with surveyors tape. Everybody pitched in and helped move the targets, pull the ones not being used and even gave the paddles a quick recoat.

For the pistol portion of the match, there were 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane. These too were shot in the left, right, left, right format. 13 shooters shot the pistol portion. 10 shooters shot hunter style while the 3 others shot the pistol portion offhand with their rifles for additional practice.

The pistol match went off without a hitch. After the match, the awards were presented along with a couple raffle prizes. Todd B. won the cash award provided by Dave L. and Tom W. won a Noteworthy swinger target. After the awards, everyone jumped in and lent a helping hand to tear everything down and pack it away. Lots of hands make for quick work and it is very much appreciated!

That concludes BCSA's matches for the 2012 season. Thanks to everyone that came out this year and we hope to see those of you that couldn't make it out this year real soon. There is still plenty of additional FT matches in the NE before the end of the year, including the NY State match at EFTCC in November. See you in 2013!!

Now on to the course layouts, results and some more pictures!
