BCSA 6/10/2017 Field Target Match Report

OK, this wet weather stuff is getting OLD! After having to battle the rain all of last year……this year has started out pretty much the same! Our supposed first match of the year (back in May) was canceled due to the what turned out to be a 40 degree rain filled day….good call! Up until about a day ago, this month’s match was starting to look like it was going to be another wet day! It wasn’t till Friday morning that all the forecasts started to come together and match time was going to be fine! Ok, game on!

In usual fashion, my wife Pat and I went to the range on Friday to setup our canopies and place all the targets. Again there were threats of afternoon showers, but none materialized. Other than the hot weather, we had everything setup in about 3 hours. After a final check to make sure we had everything together, we called it a night. We arrived at the range at 6:30am to pull the strings and get the sight-in targets put out. On the way to the range, we did hit a few rain showers, but that was it for the day! We started pulling strings and shortly after we got started, Art and Issy Deuel arrived and lent us a helping hand. Between all of us, we made short work of it and we were ready for the day

The competitors for the day started to arrive and a few of them also had a few rain showers to drive through, but overall nothing too heavy. That was a good sign, especially since the radar was showing another small heavy rain storm heading our way! We ended up with 18 individuals, but 19 scores. Superman Brian VanLiew opted to shoot 2 separate classes at once. Thank you all for coming out!

As always, there was a good mix of ages on hand ranging from a new young shooter (Anthony, that Nic brought with him) to our elder statesman, Hans Apelles. This was also the first match of the season for a couple of shooters, and they were definitely glad to be out among friends! The close-nit quarters of our range makes for a relaxed atmosphere where everyone gets to hang out and chat with their fellow shooters!

The weather for the day turned out FANTASTIC! After the clouds lifted, the temperature rose and coats were shed! The temperatures started in the 60’s and rose into the lower 80’s with just a slight breeze. There were a few gusts but not enough throughout the match to cause any issues!

The stats for today’s rifle match was an avg. KZ size of 1.18”, an avg. yardage of 33.54yds and an avg. difficulty of 32.86T. The Course Standard Deviation was 9.75. The course consisted of 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. There was 1 kneeling lane and 1 standing lane. For some reason the evil match director ran the 2 positional lanes back to back! Unfortunately there were 2 cold lines! Both were string related. 1 was the clasp coming off and the other was for for a string getting caught on on of the target bolts. Other than that, there were no other issues during the rifle match.

After the conclusion of the rifle match, we handed out the awards and reset a few thing in order to get ready for the pistol match. Once all the festivities were complete, everyone jumped in and lent a helping hand in picking things up. Boy does teardown go quick…..Thanks everyone! I also want to thank Issy & Janet for helping Pat out with verifying the scores...........Thanks Ladies!

BCSA 8/12/2017 Field Target Match Report

BCSA August 12th………….I mean August 13th Match Report

Well….again we had to deal with the chance of rain…this time it was thunderstorms! At 11am on Friday I cancelled the match for Saturday since 4 of the weather websites were calling for a 50 plus percent chance of showers/thunderstorms. Later that evening I checked the sites again and Sunday didn’t look too bad! I asked my wife/assistant what she thought about seeing if anyone wanted to shoot on Sunday. Her answer was go for it! I sent out an email to gauge interest. Within 5 minutes of sending that email, the responses started rolling in for the affirmative! Ended up getting 14 responses for yes, so it was a go

My wife and I arrived at the club at 6:00am to start setting things up in order to get ready for the day’s festivities! We had just got a few lanes roughly set when Art & Issy Deuel arrived and lent a hand! Boy was their help greatly appreciated! Art, Pat & I were laying out the targets and measuring their distances as Issy was putting fresh paper on the sight-in targets. Within an hour and a half or so we were ready!! Again….thanks Art & Issy!!

The 14 participants that committed for the day started to arrive. Bill Campbell brought along his fishing buddy Louis Hopewell for his first field target match! Welcome Louis! Sean McDaniel, Eric Brewer, Leo Gonzales and Tom Wade all made their first trips of the season to BCSA. Once all the hello’s were said, we got the sight-in/registration started! After an hour or so of shooting at paper and also shooting the bull it was match time! A quick shooters meeting, lane assignments were given and it was game on!

We ended up with one cold line due to a string coming apart which was an easy fix. Wyatt was the only shooter in WFTF PCP this time so he cruised to an easy victory! Hunter piston was a hotly contested race with the first and second place winners from this year’s Crosman All American Field Target Championship (CAAFTC) squaring off head to head once again! Paul Manktelow and Eric Brewer exchanged blows throughout the match with one taking the lead then the other. In the end, they tied!!! Shoot off time! The target that was chosen was a ½ inch KZ at 18 yards. Both shooters (from the seated position) knocked it down on their first shot. The target was then moved to 27 yards and each of them tried again. Both came up short on their first shots, but Eric hung in there and dropped it on his second try to win the shootoff against Paul. I don’t think this rivalry is over yet!

Another battle that was brewing was for WFTF Piston. Leo Gonzales defeated Jerry LaRocca to take the win! In Hunter PCP, “The Legend” Kevin Kunkle took first, Sean McDaniel second and Craig Evans third. Now what’s interesting is that Kevin “The Legend” has been playing this year and has also dabbled in Freestyle and even tried his hand at WFTF PCP whereas Craig has been mostly shooting Freestyle. Not sure how they really felt about going back to 12x!!

I want to thank everyone that opted to make this match happen today and thank you for all the help with tear-down!!! It is greatly appreciated! It turned out to be a GREAT day with GREAT friends!

Now on to the results! The match particulars were: 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match, 13 targets beyond 40 yards, 7 of those 13 were beyond 50 yards. The average yardage was 34.23 yards for a 32.74T difficulty. The std. deviation was 8.52.

BCSA 9/23/2017 Field Target Match Report

Finally!!! We had no rain in the forecast for either set-up or Match Day! It’s been at least 2 years since that happened!

We had 18 participants with 19 scores!. Nathan Thomas shot both WFTF Piston and WFTF PCP with his newly acquired FWB 800 FT. The weather was FANTASTIC! A nice cool morning that warmed to the upper 70’s to low 80’s by the end of the match.

I must apologize for the delayed report. Usually my competitors see the report in there inboxes and posted here by the time they get home! Well, this time around 10 of us were going to make the 3 hour trek south to shoot the Pennsylvania State match at the Delaware County Field and Stream club in Brookhaven, PA the following day so it was a hectic weekend!

I set the course identical to the course I set last month! Why you ask……..well, last month, there were plenty of complaints about dark targets in dark lanes. The match particulars were: 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match, 13 targets beyond 40 yards, 7 of those 13 were beyond 50 yards. The average yardage was 34.23 yards for a 32.74T difficulty. The std. deviation was 8.52 This time around I painted all the targets a Sky Blue on the upper half and their normal base colors on the bottom half. I was curious as to how the scores would compare. Well..the majority of the shooters increased their scores by just a couple of points…..so the jury is still out on color selection!

We had 2 shootoffs for the day. The first shootoff was for 2nd place in Hunter Piston. The shootoff pitted Eric Brewer against Kevin Kunkle. Now, it must be stated that Kevin has pretty much shot all AAFTA Divisions and Classes this year. I think this was his first time in Hunter Piston for 2017. Anyways, a long 1 1/2” target was chosen, 1 shot was taken by each …..and Eric came out the victor! Oh, as for the continuing Eric and Paul rivalry……….Paul won this round!

The other shootoff was for 2nd place in Hunter Pistol. This shootoff put Craig Evans up against Sean “The Reducer” McDaniel! Again, 1 shot from each….and Sean came out the victor!

I want to thank everyone for coming out and spending the day at BCSA! Also, thanks to all that stayed and helped with the teardown and cleanup! It is ALWAYS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

BCSA 10/14/2017 Match Report

Well, the 2017 FT Season at BCSA (Broome County Sportsmen’s Association - Binghamton, NY) has come to a close! The day was overcast with temperatures in the low to mid 60’s. The wind I was hoping for never really materialized…….darn it! There was a slight breeze at times that made us lower powered shooters hold outside a little bit, but nothing major.

Today we had 20 rifle shooters on hand. Ken Burley made his first trip (and hopefully not his last) to BCSA from the Western NY area. He and his wife Sue were among the first group to arrive. No, they didn’t beat Deuel’s who arrived shortly after my wife and I did. As always, Art and Issy immediately jumped in and lent us a hand pulling strings and setting up the sight-in range.

Shortly after we got set-up, the competitors for the day started to arrive! It always feels good seeing cars pull in knowing that all the work was worth it! Among the people for the day was our local “I do this for fun” shooter Bill and his buddy Louis. They were sporting new Gamo Bone Collectors, pretty much fresh off the store shelf. They ran over to our old silhouette house to try to get their new equipment setup. The rest of the people signed in and chose a spot on the sight-in range to verify their numbers.

After the sight-in session, we QUICKLY cleaned up the sight-in area and made our way over to the range for another day of fun! Oh, besides the fun, there was also plenty of sugary snacks! Jerry brought along cookies and Issy brought a big batch of peanut butter fudge…..thanks you two!

The match particulars were: 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match, 15 targets beyond 40 yards, 7 of those 13 were beyond 50 yards. The average yardage was 35.45 yards for a 34.75T difficulty. The std. deviation was 7.88. I kept the light blue faceplate color scheme this time, but I think I’m going back to my normal colors next season! There is just something about seeing all the targets standout that just doesn’t feel right! There has got to be a little mystery!

We had 1 little string issue early on that was quickly corrected and no other cold lines for the rest of the match.

After the conclusion of the rifle match, the scores were tallied and the awards were presented, Sean McDaniel was the high scorer for the day with a 51/60 followed very closely by Jerry LaRocca who had a 50/60! This time around, Sean was shooting Hunter PCP using his trusty Marauder and not a borrowed spring gun or his fancy FX Streamline that’s still in transit from who knows where! Great shooting you two!

After a short break, it was on to the pistol match. For this month’s match, I placed 10 additional targets out so that all that needed to be done for set-up was just running a few strings and we were all set to go! We had 3 pistol shooters and 6 more of us that shot the course again using our rifles. Some of us rifle shooters were trying to better our first round scores while a few others were either shooting everything standing or trying different equipment.

Craig Evans came out on top of the pistol shooters with a 35/40 on a course with a difficulty of 31.8T. Great job Craig!!

I want to thank everyone for coming out and spending the day (and the season) at BCSA! Also, thanks to all that stayed and helped with the teardown and cleanup! It is ALWAYS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!
