BCSA 5/7/2016 Field Target Match Report

The 2016 season has started at BCSA!

Our area dealt with wet weather all week, but the skies brightened and the rain subsided for the match today! Excellent!! The weather for the match ranged from overcast, to slightly overcast to a few peaks of sun here and there and everything in between, but no rain! The breeze was light and switching today as well as picking up in intensity at the wrong moment!

SET-UP

18 participants were on hand today to kick off our season. There were 19 scores recorded for the rifle match. Ironman Nathan Thomas opted to shoot 2 classes again this weekend.

Art and Issy Deuel were the first to arrive and jumped right in to help my wife Pat & I finish pulling strings and set up the sight-in range. As soon as the targets were set, the cars started rolling in......that always makes all the work worthwhile!

After an hour or so of sight-in, it was off to the course. Shooters were assigned lanes with 2 shooters per squad.Things moved along pretty quickly and the rifle match was over before we knew it. The difficulty for today’s course for today was a 31.8T. There were 10 lanes with 2 being positional lanes, 1 standing and 1 kneeling. There were 3 targets per lane for a 60 shot match. As Brian Van Liew (who made his first trip to our range) said, at first glance, the course looked easy........but looks are deceiving!

High score for the day went to Dennis Himes who was shooting Hunter PCP with a score of 48. Followed closely by his brother Thomas Himes with a 47 (Hunter PCP) and Jerry LaRocca with a 47 (WFTF PCP) who was shooting a custom Crosman 1720T Carbine. Nathan, who shot 2 classes today, had a 43 in WFTF Piston (1st place) and a 41 in WFTF PCP....well done!

NATHAN

A couple of months ago, I informed my shooters via email that BCSA was NOT offering and unlimited/freestyle/whatever class this year. Instead, open was going to be OPEN. By this I meant, take your higher seat and sticks and whatever else is allowed by AAFTA and shoot in the Open Division. Craig Evans and Hans Apelles took me up on this. Craig ended up taking top honors in Open today using his Hunter seat and sticks along with his 12 fpe Challenger and Aeon 8-32 scope. Hans was shooting with his Crosman 1720T rifle, tall seat, sticks and his Leupold Comp 35x. We’ll run this through this season and see how things pan out.

CRAIG

HANS

At the conclusion of the rifle match, the awards were presented , 2 targets were moved and some reducers were pulled and the pistol match was set.

We had 3 pistol shooters and 4 rifle (just for fun/practice shooters. Jerry LaRocca was the lone open pistol shooter. His choice of equipment today was a Crosman 1720T pistol with an UltraDot Red Dot. Don’t know how he saw some of those killzones, but he did! Jerry shot a 27/40. Top honors in Hunter Pistol went to Craig Evans who shot a 32/40. The difficulty for the pistol match was a 34.3T

PISTOL SHOOTERS

At the conclusion of the pistol match, awards were handed and the competitors jumped in and lent a hand with tear down which is always GREATLY APPRECIATED!

BCSA 8/13/2015 Field Target Match Report

BCSA August 13th, 2016 Match Report

Boy has it been a challenge with holding matches at BCSA this year! With the abnormally dry Summer we’ve had, it seems all our match dates fall on the weekend where rain is forecast! This month’s match was no different. All week long, 4 of the major weather websites were calling for HOT, HUMID weather with a 50% or greater chance of thunderstorms! It was decided 20 hours before match time that it was a go!

When my wife and I arrived at the range to do the final prep, it was apparent that the weather people at least got the HOT & Humid parts right! Art & Issy Deuel were the first to arrive and jumped in to help setup the sight in range and pull the target strings. Not long after, the competitors for the day started arriving and arriving and arriving. We all must be a little demented to want to come out and sweat for the day just to all get together and shoot our air rifles.

We had 25 shooters for this hot and sticky match day! Along with all the regulars and semi-regulars, Marty Johnson, Mike Korczakowski, Mike Norris, Brian VanLiew & Joel Yaddow, all made a returning visit to BCSA. We also had a couple of shooters join us for their first visit to our range! Dan Bott came down from near Rochester, NY and Craig Evans brought along his grandson Wyatt!

The sight-in range was opened up before 8:00am so that shooters could get set and we could try to get out before the forecasted rain came. We closed and packed up the sight in range before 9:00am and started the shooters meeting & match.

Sight-in

Sight-in photo IMG_3259_zps32tnbqca.jpg

The course of fire was 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. 1 lane was a standing lane and 1 was a kneeling lane. We ended up going with 7 squads of 3 and 2 squads of 2. There was 1 cold line called due to a string hangup, but no other target issues or cold lines throughout the match.

For the statisticians, the average yardage for the rifle match was 32.1 yards with an average difficulty of 29.1T. The course had as SD of 13.6 with respect to yardage and a SD of 10.2 with respect to difficulty. With there being no to very little wind and no elevated targets, no additional difficulty factors were used.

At the conclusion of the rifle match, it was discovered that Brian VanLiew & Mike Norris tied in Open PCP with a score of 50/60. The shoot-off started with each shooter shooting a 1 1/2” KZ at 35 yards (Standing). Both missed it twice. Next it was a 1 1/4” KZ at 46 yards (Kneeling). Again both shooters missed it. The last target that was chosen had a 1” KZ at 33 yards and they both shot at it kneeling. Brian was victorious with the knockdown! There was also a tie for 2nd place in Hunter PCP between Glenn Thomas & Dan Bott. The same 1” KZ target was chosen and Dan Bott was the victor!

Rifle Shooters

Firing Line photo IMG_3266_zpscsvradqp.jpg

After the conclusion of the rifle match, awards were handed out and many of the Hot and Sticky competitors packed it in for the day! Five shooters stayed to sweat it out in the pistol match while 2 more shot the pistol match with their rifles for practice. All of those shooting the pistol match opted to shoot Hunter.

Pistol Shooters

Glenn & Bill photo IMG_3355_zpsusjednfk.jpg

The stats for the pistol match were an average yardage of 16.9 yards with an average difficulty of 36.1T. The SD of 7.2 (yardage) & SD of 10.2 (difficulty)

Now, Craig Evans was victorious over his grandson in the rifle match, but Wyatt wasn’t about to lay down during the pistol match! Wyatt ended up beating grandpa in the pistol match! Wyatt not only beat Craig, but took first place! It was also overheard that not only did Wyatt win 1st, but also earned a walk home! Yeah, pretty sure Craig took his proud grandson home!

At the conclusion of the pistol match, awards were presented and the remaining competitors all jumped in and lent a helping hand to tear things down!

I want to thank everyone for coming out on such a (yes, I’m going to say it again!) hot, humid and iffy day weather wise! It is the shooters that make all the behind the scenes work worthwhile!

Now on to the results!

BCSA 10/1/2016 Field Target Match Report

CSA October 1st, 2016 Match Report

Boy has it been a challenge with holding matches at BCSA this year! With the abnormally dry Summer we’ve had, it seems all our match dates fall on the weekend where rain is forecast! This month’s match was no different. Hmmmmmm that’s how I started out August’s match report……..well it fits again!!! Rain was forecast all week for match day! My wife and I set up the match Friday afternoon with temperatures in the low 60’s in a light rain with a few misty breaks. Fingers crossed that match day would be a little drier!

On the drive to the range, we had a few sprinkles here and there, but absolutely nothing when we arrived. No rain whatsoever for the entire match!!!! The temperature started off around 50 degrees and only rose to about 59! The skies stayed overcast all day with winds maxing out around 10 mph.

As usual, Art and Issy Deuel were the first ones to arrive and jumped right in and helped do the final match prep. There were 11 shooters on hand for the rifle match. Due to prior commitments, the recent Pyramyd Air Cup and being 1 week before the Nationals, I knew the turnout would be light.

I didn’t pre-plan my target layout this time, instead I randomly set them where I thought they felt right then measured them afterwards. I wanted to make the course a little more difficult then usual so that those going to the Nationals had a good practice round. The difficulty ended up at a 32.6T (no additional multipliers for environmental factors), average yardage being 33.6 yards, average KZ size of 1.2” and a standard deviation of 8.8. There was 10 lanes which included 1 forced standing and 1 forced kneeling lane. 12 of the 30 targets were beyond 40 yards and not all fullsize!

The rifle match went off with no problems and no cold lines! I had plenty of dark targets in dark lanes and with the lack of sunshine………well that only added to the difficulty! At the completion of the rifle match, the Father and Son duo of Glenn & Nathan Thomas tied for a match high of 46/60!

After the rifle match, awards were handed out, a short break was taken then the pistol match began! There were 6 pistol competitors all shooting Hunter and 2 others shooting their rifles for practice. Nic Gregoris shot his Beman R10, hunter piston style while Nathan Thomas shot his Walther LGU offhand to get some additional practice in, yes, Nathan also shot Hunter Pistol at the same time!

There was 1 cold line during the pistol match. 1 of the targets didn’t want to come up all the time. Nothing a little stick shim wouldn’t fix! There was definitely more than a few real difficult pistol targets! There were 2 targets that were at the verge of being off the charts! That said, all the pistol shooters put in very good scores! The victor for the day was Craig Evans with a 36 out of 40!! Way to go! The Son won out over the Father with Nathan Thomas coming in second, shooting a 32 out of 49 and besting his dad Glenn by 7 points! Kevin Kunkle was just 2 points behind Nathan shooting a 30 which was just 1 point over Eric Brewer who shot a 29. To round out the pistol competitors, Wyatt Evans Gartley had a 26 and Glenn Thomas had a 25.

BCSA 10/23/2016 Match Report

BCSA October 23rd, 2016 Match Report

I know I have said this more than once already this year, BUT boy has it been a challenge with holding matches at BCSA this year! With the abnormally dry Summer we’ve had, it seems all our match dates fall on the weekend where rain is forecast! AGAIN This month’s match was no different. At the beginning of the week, it looked like Saturday was going to be fine, but by Wednesday the weather forecast took a turn! 4 of the major weather websites were calling for high winds with near a 100 percent chance of rain! Guess we’ll have to cancel this one, our last match of 2016……………………well, not so fast!!!! I saw an email from Brian VanLiew Friday morning asking if we could shoot Sunday. I didn’t think it was possible, but after a few phone calls and emails, it could happen. I sent out a mass email asking for a show of hands and received 17 replies for let’s do it!!!!! Ok, A Sunday match it is!

Well it rained and was WINDY and raw all day Saturday, so good call on no match! When I sent the email saying we were on, I also said I’d be there Sunday morning by 7:00am to do the set-up and any help would be greatly appreciated! When my wife and I arrived at the range (in the DARK), Art and Issy Deuel were already there and Kevin Kunkle had pulled in just in front of us. We offloaded the targets and starting randomly placing the targets. Before we were finished, Tom Wade arrived and jumped in to help us finish up the targets. We then ran a tape measure out and placed the sight-in targets. All finished before 8:00am and ready for the match……EXCELLENT……..Thanks for the help all!

Shortly after we had finished setting up, the competitors for the day started to arrive. Not only was everyone bundled up for the day, but came bearing gifts! Issy Deuel brought Peanut Butter Fudge, Jerry LaRocca brought breakfast cookies and Brian VanLiew brought chocolate chip bars!! Yep, there was gonna be a sugar high for the day!

The weather didn’t disappoint! The temperature (real feel) was in the low 30’s with 10mph sustained winds and 18mph gusts during sight-in and ended the day with temps (real feel) in the low 40’s with 18mph sustained wings with gusts pushing 30mph! I thought to myself……hmmmmm…..I guess the wind difficulty factor is appropriate for today! There should probably be some difficulty factors added for darkness plus some of the targets blended in to their backgrounds..............but we'll just add for wind!!!

BCSA 10/23/16 Weather - Match photo Weather_zpsfm4k6kly.jpg

The stats for today’s (thrown together at the last minute with randomly placed targets) match was an avg. KZ size of 1.2”, an avg. yardage of 27.4yds and an avg. difficulty of 32.2T (w/o wind 25.8T). The Standard Deviation was 11.5T (9.2T w/o wind). The course consisted of 10 lanes with 3 targets per lane. There was 1 kneeling lane and 1 standing lane. There were no cold lines, well, no cease fire calls due to target issues, but pretty sure everyone on the line was cold!!!

Dressed for the day!

We opted not to shoot a pistol match this time around, so after the conclusion of the rifle match everyone jumped in and lent a hand tearing the course down. After the tear down was complete awards were handed out and everyone said there goodbyes.

It’s been a tough season match wise at BCSA this year with 5 out of the 5 scheduled matches being threatened with rain (so much for a dry year), but we made it through with only 1 cancellation!! I want to thank everyone for participating and helping out all season! Without all of you, this wouldn’t happen. Hopefully we’ll see all the regulars along with some new faces in 2017!
