BCSA 5/11/2019 Field Target Match Report
Another Season of Field Target in underway at BCA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY). Our weather this Spring has been very wet. There has only been a handful of days where rain hasn’t been in the forecast. The early forecast for Match Day was looking pretty good……BUT….the forecast for Friday’s set-up was not good! My wife, Dave Lee and myself opted to do our set-up on Thursday afternoon in order to stay dry. Good call since Friday’s weather didn’t disappoint! Hail, heavy rain, severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings were plenty!
My wife Pat and I arrived early Saturday morning to get things finished up and see how things fared. We pulled the strings and set the sight-in range. While we were finishing up, our first competitor of the day (Glenn Thomas) arrived. Within the next half hour, we had a count of 23 for the day. One of those was Mike Norris who came bearing gifts! Mike brought along a Paul Porch Egret target to donate to the club! Thanks Mike……..greatly appreciated!!! Mike and I went and set the target on the course so that it could make it’s BCSA debut!
Sight-in was under the cover of our 100 yard rifle range. Pat handled all the registration, score card prep and waivers while the shooters were getting ready for the day. Paul Manktelow had a Bachelor weekend and was solo, so no Janet to lend a hand. After an hour long sight-in session, we all made our way over to the FT range.
Before the match got underway, we had a little a little class/discussion session. The topics covered in the class were proper use of the timer, what happens when targets are shot out of order, not to take additional shots (practice shots) once the match has started during a Grand Prix match and a discussion about sling use in Hunter Class. Once class was over, it was game on!
The layout for the match had 15 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (7 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty of 35.03T. There was a definite wind that ranged from around 5mph - 14mph during the match that was not included in the difficulty value. This definitely accounted for a few of the misses. The sky was overcast at the start, but after a hour or so the sun popped out. It was funny hearing people say my wind flag was blowing to the right yet my pellet went way left………..welcome to the tricky BCSA range!
A few guys were shooting and settling in to their new classes of choice. Brian VanLiew was in WFTF PCP as was Kevin Kunkle with his Anschutz 9015 HP. Glenn Thomas was in WFTF Piston and getting some trigger time with a springer in preparation for the 2019 Worlds! Along with new classes, Jeff Little was giving his new Steyr another workout.
We had 1 cold line to correct a string hangup issue…………my fault for setting a target behind a stack of pallets. The new Egret target was hanging up a little, but it’s new and will wear in just fine.
As we finished up the 10 lane 60 shot match, the competitors for the day handed their cards to Pat who checked and finalized them before we handed out the awards. After the conclusion of the awards presentation, we took a short break while we pulled the strings for the pistol targets.
With the pistol course set and the match competitors done with their plinking and shooting the bull session we started the match. For this match, we had 7 Hunter Pistol shooters and 3 Limited Pistol shooters. I did lump Leo Gonzales and John Eroh who were shooting hands only in with Nathan Thomas who was shooting Limited Pistol.
Along with the pistol shooters, Vasyl Povroznyk shot all the targets standing with his rifle for some offhand practice. Paul Manktelow re-shot some rifle targets with his R9 while Brian VanLiew and Mike Harris were playing with Brian’s HW97 set to WFTF levels.
No cold lines during the Pistol match. The difficulty for the match was 32.54T. There was no forced position for the match and the wind speed did come down a little…….still around 9mph max.
At the conclusion of the pistol match……the remaining people jumped in and helped with the teardown then the awards were presented.
A bunch of us went to grab a quick bite to eat to unwind and relive the day.
Thanks to all that came out to play in what turned out to be an awesome spring day with a much needed break to all the wet weather we’ve been dealing with! Also a big thanks to my wife for keeping us all in line! It was nice to finally get out and and get back in the groove after a long Winter!

BCSA 6/8/2019 Field Target Match Report
Our 2nd match of the 2019 season at BCSA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY) is complete! We had an excellent weekend weatherwise. This is actually the first time since September 2018 where we’ve had 3 consecutive days with no precipitation in the forecast! Brights skies were plenty………but there were plenty of dark lanes that gave the participants for the day fits of disgust! Temperatures started in the upper 50’s and rose to near 80. The wind went from calm to mild to gusts near 20 mph then back down again…………this also left quite a few people scratching their heads!
My wife Pat and I went to the range to set-up Friday around noon. With all the wet weather we’ve had, cleanup and prep work took a bit longer than usual, but we got it done.
Match day, we arrived, pulled strings, set-up the sight-in range and Game On! The competitors for the day started to arrive shortly before 8am. Bill Day was among the first to arrive after the long trek from the State of Maine. While people were sighting in, Pat and Janet Manktelow handled all the clerical stuff and kept everyone in line. Also, Mike Norris brought along a bag full of hats that were embroidered with a Field Target logo for sale. The ladies handled the sales of those too. Thanks
After our sight-in period, we made our way over to the Field Target range to start the match festivities! Among the competitors for the day, we had a new addition to our range…Tom Hall. Tom made the drive up from downstate NY and shot both the rifle match and the pistol match hunter style using his Crosman 1720T with a Leapers 2-7 power scope!
The layout for the match had 15 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (7 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty of 35.38T. The tricky little wind definitely caused quite a few misses! Even though the wind was mainly light, the times that it picked up definitely made things interesting. On lane 10 for example, your wind flag could be blowing dead left yet the tall grass near the target would be showing it was blowing dead right! Who knows what was going on between the 2 points!
A couple of the guys were testing out and getting the hang of their newer acquisitions. Jerry LaRocca was trying a different barrel on his Anschutz 9015, Paul Manktelow was giving his $20 FX Crown a run in Hunter PCP, Brian VanLiew was using his recently acquired TM1000 in WFTF PCP, Sean McDaniel was using his Ataman that just came back from some down south R and R and Dennis Himes was testing out his new scope……………guess it works Dennis since you got Match high!
We had 1 cold line due to Louis Hopewell shooting off a reducer on a target. The Pounded Paddle reducers we use, have a spring clip on the back. Just had to pop the reducer back in place and put a little more tension on the spring and we were back in action!
As people finished up the 10 lane 60 shot match, the competitors handed their cards to the Ladies who checked and finalized them before we handed out the awards.
We had a tie for 3rd place in Hunter PCP. Tom Himes decided to give Bill Day the award. After the conclusion of the awards presentation, we took a short break while we pulled the strings for the pistol targets. During the break, people chatted, tried each others equipment and generally hung out.
We had 6 Hunter Pistol shooters for the match along with 3 of us re-shooting the course with our rifles. Craig Evans had an equipment failure and took a DNF. He said he’ll definitely have to get it on the bench to see what happened.
There were no cold lines during the Pistol match. The difficulty for the match was 32.54T, with no forced position lanes
At the conclusion of the pistol match it was found that there was a tie for first place between Eric Brewer and Sean McDaniel. Kevin Kunkle decided that they shoot a Gamo Turkey target at 30 yards with a 1.25” KZ for the shootoff target…………WAIT, he told them to shoot it standing! Sean went first………..miss, Eric was able to connect on his first shot…………….Victory!
All the remaining people jumped in and helped with the teardown which included using the new string winders donated from Sean since the mason string winders we used took too long to wind.
Thanks to all that came out to play in what turned out to be another awesome day! That’s 2 matches in a row with no rain forecast! Also a big thanks to Pat and Janet for keeping us all in line!

BCSA 7/13/2019 Field Target Match Report
Our 3rd match of the 2019 season at BCSA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY) is complete! We had another fine day for some Field Target.
The day started with my wife and I arriving early and pulling the strings and setting up the sight-in range! Right around 8am, the participants for the day started to arrive and the day of fun in the sun had begun! We ended p with 17 competitors for the day. As usual, My wife Pat and Janet Manktelow handled all the registration duties…………..very greatly appreciated Ladies!
After our sight-in period, and getting a little food in our bellies from the breakfast goodies that Jerry LaRocca brought, we made our way over to the Field Target range to start the match festivities. The layout for the match had 13 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (8 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty of 33.95T. Temperatures started in the upper 60’s and rose to the low 80’s. The wind was calm for the most part but there were a few times it picked up enough to make people rethink their holds! Brights skies were again plenty………but there were still plenty of dark lanes to make people utter some words under their breath!
The rifle match went off without a hitch……..NO cold lines! We started the match shortly after 9am and ended shortly before noon. Things go smooth and quick with running 2 people per lane. Seems like there ended up being a 3-way tie for first place in Hunter PCP between Tom Wade, Paul Manktelow and Sean McDaniel. I nominated Kevin Kunkle to run the shootoff. He had free reign to chose the target and position it was to be shot. Kevin chose an 18 yard target with a 1” KZ and they were to shoot it standing. All 3 missed on their first attempt. Tom was able to connect on his second try. Paul and Sean were unable to match Tom. Sean conceded and took the 3rd place finish.
After the completion of the rifle match, we handed out awards. There were a few people that went back to their vehicles to grab their pistol match gear, so we had some down time. While we were in limbo, Janet called out to get everyone’s attention. She especially wanted Pat and I to come over. Seems that she and Paul had brought a cake to celebrate our Anniversary next weekend. It was a very nice surprise and enjoyed by all…………….THANK YOU!
The final awards were handed out and it was pistol match time! We had 4 shooters in Hunter and 2 in Limited…….well kinda really Limited since both Jerry and Mike Harris were using Red-dots! The layout for the pistol match had 1 standing lane and a difficulty of 34.72T. Along with the pistol shooters, John Eroh, Ray Apelles and Leo Gonzales all shot standing with their rifles in order to get some practice in for their upcoming travels to England in a few weeks.
Again, NO cold lines and everything went pretty quick! After the completion of the match, everyone jumped in to help with the teardown………..Again, Greatly appreciated!!!
Things were all stowed away, awards handed out and goodbyes till next time said.
Thanks to all that came out to play in what turned out to be another awesome day! That’s 3 matches in a row with no rain forecast!

BCSA 8/10/2019 Field Target Match Report
Our 4th match of the 2019 season at BCSA (Broome County Sportsmens Assoc. - Binghamton, NY) is complete! AND We had yet another fine day for some Field Target.
Wasn’t sure what we were going to get for turnout since a few of our regulars are overseas shooting the 2019 Worlds. Hopefully they all had a GREAT TIME. We ended up with 21 competitors for the day. As usual, my wife Pat and Janet Manktelow handled all the registration duties…………..as always………..greatly appreciated Ladies!
After our sight-in period we made our way over to the Field Target range to start the match. The layout for the match had 14 of the 30 targets beyond 40 yards (6 of which were beyond 50 yards) with 1 standing and 1 kneeling lane for a difficulty of 34.24T. Temperatures started in the mid 50’s and rose to the low 70’s. The wind was variable all day, everything from a slight breeze to gusts in the 20’s! It made for an interesting and challenging match. As with last month’s match, brights skies were again plenty………but there were still plenty of dark lanes!
There were no cold lines for the match and things moved right along! We had started out with the 21 shooters, but a few dropped out early on since they were fighting gun issues. I brought out some targets from the past in order to give the shooters some variety. There were some Pounded Paddle, a Rhino and some old Turner “screen door” targets! Everything worked flawlessly!

After the completion of the rifle match awards were handed out and it was pistol match time! We had 3 shooters in Hunter and 1 in Limited. The layout for the pistol match had 1 standing lane and a difficulty of 35.24T. Along with the pistol shooters, Eric Brewer and Sean McDaniel shot targets standing an kneeling in order to get some positional practice in before the upcoming Pyramyd Cup. Brian VanLiew took to the lanes with a different rifle and re-shot the rifle course. Brian bettered his first round score and I added his results to the bottom of the rifle match scores
We had 1 cold line due to one of the rings on the target falling off. It was a quick fix and we were back underway! Yes, that has been added to the repair list! After the completion of the match, awards were handed out and everyone jumped in to help with the teardown………..As always, Greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks to everyone that came out in what turned out to be another awesome day! That’s now 4 matches in a row with no rain forecast!

BCSA 9/14/2019 Field Target Match Report
Our 5th Match of the 2019 Season Is complete. The way the weather forecast was playing out, we weren’t sure it was going to happen! Early in the week, the forecast was for 50%+ chance of showers and up to 30mph gusts! There was really no change in the forecast as match day approached. I sent out a warning of a possible cancellation and received replies like “looks good to me” and “man up”! Ok fine……..let’s see if the “build it and they will come” quote holds true!We ended up with 15 competitors for the day!, of which one was a new shooter. Jim Danvers made his second trip to our match and has been doing some studying! Jim came to our last match as a spectator/semi competitor. He took a few shots the last time with Dave Lee’s rifle, but both retired early and headed back to the rifle range to work out some new numbers. This time around, Jim shot the match with his newly acquired Marauder and finished with a 26! On a pretty tough course with the wind…….Good Job! Pretty sure that there were others that had planned on coming, but were turned off by the forecast. Well we did get some rain……………just a couple of sprinkles during the pistol match………and that was it! Dry the entire rest of the day. When it sprinkled, it wasn’t even enough to thoroughly wet anything. Yes, the wind forecast was correct and it was overcast all day……I guess a 50% forecast is better than getting it 100% wrong! The wind did have a few lulls, but overall stayed between 10 and 15 mph with a few gusts throughout the match in the mid 20s!
We started sight-in just before 8 am and as usual, my wife Pat handled all the registration duties with a helping hand from Janet Manktelow…………..as always………..greatly appreciated Ladies. After our sight-in period we made our way over to the Field Target range to start the match. This time around, when my wife and I set the course, we skipped the use of the tape measure. We did lay out a string at 35 yards to ensure none of the pistol targets were over that. As for the rifle targets, it was a free for all! We carried the targets out and dropped them where we thought looked good. I warned everyone in advance during the shooters meeting as to what we did and that there may be some targets that aren’t AAFTA Grand Prix legal. Sean McDaniel, Eric Brewer and I each used our rangefinders after we shot our lanes to determine the distances. All the numbers we wrote down were almost identical, so that was a good check. Looks like we didn’t do too bad of a job just randomly placing the targets. The course difficulty (without wind) was a 34.69T. We had only 1 illegal target which was a 1.25” KZ target at 46 yards. Definitely under the 50T max and only 3 feet beyond the max distance for that KZ size! Some other stats were 14 targets out of the 30 targets were beyond 40 yards and out of those 14, 8 targets were beyond 50 yards! The average yardage for the course was 35.90 feet! Definitely not a cake walk!
There were no cold lines for the match and things moved right along! We started the match shortly after 9:00am, and after running through the 10 lane 60 shot course………..we were done around 11:30am! After the completion of the rifle match awards were handed out and it was pistol match time! We had only 2 shooters this time around. Sean and Eric shot Hunter Pistol while a couple of us shot for fun/practice. Leo Gonzales shot with his hands only pistol! That must have been fun in that wind! Turns out that Sean and Eric tied and also decided to share the first place award!
Thanks to everyone that came out in what turned out to be a decent day! That’s now 5 matches in a row with no rain…….ok, we did have a few sprinkles! Also a big thanks to all those that helped with the teardown! Always GREATLY appreciated!
Our final match for 2019 is October 12th! I know a bunch of our “local” shooters will be returning from the Nationals, but hope to see all that can make it!
I want to thank everyone for coming out and spending the day at BCSA! Also, thanks to all that stayed and helped with the teardown and cleanup! It is ALWAYS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

BCSA 10/12/2019 Match Report
Our 6th and final Match of the 2019 Season is complete. The early weather forecast was calling for late day rain….excellent! Well……Not so fast! The day before the match, the forecast changed and called for an all day chance of showers! Ok, match still on, let’s roll the dice. It was overcast with a light wind and just a couple of sprinkles. The temps for the day started in the low 40’s and ended in the mid 50’s.
As like last month, my wife Pat and I randomly placed the targets the day before. After setting the course, I used a rangefinder to get the distances. Upon returning back home, I ran the numbers and had set a 38.20 average yard course with a difficulty of 38.2T….oooppps! When we arrived at the range on match day, I adjusted a couple of targets in order to bring the difficulty down a little.
We ended up with 16 competitors for the day. Sight-in started right around 8am and after an hour of that and all the chit-chat, it was off to the Field Target range to start the day’s festivities! Many of the competitors for the day were sighting in 2 rifles each………more on that later.
After a quick shooters meeting, it was game on! The stats for the 30 target, 60 shot match course ended up with a difficulty of 35.86T with an average yardage of 36.73 yards. There was 1 kneeling lane and 1 standing lane. Also, 13 of the 30 targets were beyond 40 yards. We had 3 cold lines. One was a false alarm, one was due to the key ring blocking the KZ and the other was a rat decided he didn’t like being up on the bank and started to work his way back down to level ground! Other than that, things went pretty smooth!
After the conclusion of the rifle match, Ray Apelles was surprised by a visit from his dad and sister, Hans and Rosalie! In fact we all were! They are missed on the lanes and it was GREAT seeing them! They were there to bring a Birthday cake to share with all of us to celebrate Ray’s Birthday! Yep……time to get all sugared up before the pistol match!!
CAKE!!!
<

After our cake break, it was pistol match time! Well………..4 people shot pistol. Sean McDaniel and Glenn Thomas opted for Hunter while Leo Gonzales and Tom Hall opted for Hands only. 11 of us shot un-magnified rifles! Yep, a look below at the equipment list will show that! For quite a while, I have wanted people to shoot the pistol match with their 10M rifles. When we put our match announcement out last month, I started prepping our competitors for what was to come. This month, I laid down the course of fire. There would be 20 targets ranging from 10 yards to 35 yards and all would have black face plates with yellow full size KZ’s. I pulled out 20 brand new targets consisting of both Remington and Air Venturi. All the targets were tested and were going down with 2 fpe. This was gonna be fun! The only rule was all sights used were to be un-magnified and everyone was encouraged to keep the energy at 7 fpe or less. The stats for the pistol/10M match using the pistol spreadsheet from AAFTA was 20 targets with a difficult of 23.19T. The average yardage was 19.65 yards. Not sure what kind of difficulty factor should be added for un-magnified sights, so it was probably a little more difficult than it shows! To add to the difficulty level, John Eroh, decided to shoot all the targets standing with his open-sighted rifle!
A couple of the pistol/10M targets

After the conclusion of the pistol/10M match, everyone jumped in and helped with teardown! Thank you all! In no time, all the targets were packed up and it was time to relax and chat about the day. I asked what everyone thought about the 10M match and if I should do it again…….it was pretty much a unanimous YES! The paint scheme will change and we’ll alternate between pistol 1 month and 10M the next. This will keep things fresh and add a little fun in the mix!
Thanks to everyone that came out in 2019! We thank you for your support and will see you in 2020!!!!
