BCSA 4/23/2011 Field Target Match Report

Well, our first monthly match of the 2011 season was interesting to say the least. I had sent out emails with the predicted weather forecast to quite a few of the long distance shooters mid week asking if they still wanted to shoot. The forecast for match day was for 16-24 mph winds and a 90% chance of rain. Perfect FT weather, huh. The overwhelming response was lets do it. I for one was game considering it has been a long off-season and the last bit of snow had finally disappeared from my yard last week. We shoot under temporary canopies which would keep us somewhat protected, so it was on. The course was set up Friday night and was ready to go for whatever Mother Nature had in store for us on Saturday.

The drive to the range Saturday morning was one of mixed emotions. Yes I want to do this and with it raining as hard as it was, why am I doing this! I later found out that was the general thought of all those that attended. The forecast was right and we were going to be in for a treat. It was planned to wait things out and see who showed before the sight-in targets were set and the match started.

The shooters that were up for the match started to roll in little by little. Driving in from up to 4 ½ hours away. We hung out in the clubhouse and shot the breeze about airguns, tossed around modification/upgrade ideas and just socialized for a spell.

The heavy rain started to wind down and the sight-in range was set up. The shooters made their way over to take some shots at what targets stayed standing in the high winds. After everyone had their fill at the sight-in range we made our way over to the range to get the match started. The rain had really started to wind down by the time we took our first shots and had pretty much stopped by midway through the match.

The way our match is shot, is we have 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane making it a 40 shot match. We run through the course twice which makes it 80 shots total. We had a very good turnout especially with the forecast the way it was. We even had a local shooter/hunter (John M.) show up for his first ever FT match. John was only able to stay for the first 40 round leg, due to family commitments. With such seasoned/helpful people there, I am pretty sure John will be back and will more than likely be bringing a few buddies. The more the merrier!

It was determined that Hector was to blame (not really) for making us come out in this weather to shoot, but I think we are all just a little twisted and we're all to blame. The weather wasn't ideal, but it wasn't bad at all. The rain stopped and the wind and occasional gust made for a very interesting and fun match. Thanks to all that came out and made this happen. From all the comments that were made, everyone enjoyed being there and had a great time. Now on to the results.

BCSA 5/14/2011 Field Target Match Report

Well, another BCSA FT match and another not so pleasant forecast. The weather for the last week and a half has been fantastic, but wouldn’t you know it, 50% chance of showers for match day!

We were a little light on shooters this time around due to the weather, family matters/commitments and unexpected vehicle repairs. 7 brave souls did attend though, ready to battle the elements. The weather during sight in was not too bad. We had a light breeze that decided to blow one way then totally decide to blow in the opposite direction. This left some shooters changing their windage while others decided to leave it alone and see what was needed on the course. By the time the match started, the wind was still fairly light and unpredictable. Add to that a light rain started midway through the first round and continued through till the end. We managed to stay dry throughout due to the firing line being under cover.

John M. returned for his second FT match and seems to be enjoying himself and is probably wondering why he didn't try this sooner. He was only able to shoot the first 40 shots due to family commitments. Bill C. was out for his first match of the year and was having fun shooting his inexpensive WM gun and proving that targets will fall with it and a 4x scope. Art D. was also there, wishing the weather was better so he could have rode the bike instead of bringing the SUV. Dave L. decided to try hunter class using his sub 12 ft-lb Air Arms S200. By his comments, it appears he had fun the first round, but was regretting his decision by the end of round 2. Hans A. & Ray A. were on hand and requested a couple of close targets to be added to the match so they could get in some practice for the Worlds. I obliged, and opted to put a 1/4in KZ at 23 feet and a 3/8in KZ and 26 feet 3 inches. This put them right around 7 and 8 meters respectively. Everyone took shots at these targets even though they didn't count for match total. It is very intimidating to say the least, especially when it's so difficult to focus on something less than 10 yards.

We did run into a few targets that were being unruly. Some were going down on face hits and others were standing when hit on the rivet on the paddle. Ray's score should be 2 points higher, but he chose to not take the 2 points for the target that didn't fall when he hit the rivet.

Due to the light turnout and the rapid pace of shooting, we got done pretty early. Overall it wasn't too bad of a day. Hopefully we'll get some sunshine for our June match. This gray skies with chance of rain/showers is getting old. As for the June match, we will more than likely be running it World style, 1 shot per target and go through everything twice. This should add another little twist to the game!

BCSA 6/11/2011 Field Target Match Report

3 for 3!! Definitely not a good thing. The forecast for this match was 70% showers throughout the day! Luckily we stayed dry all the way through the match and cleanup. Upon leaving the range, I ran into a light rain about 2 miles up the road. The showers never materialized till mid afternoon. I hope this trend stops soon since we still have 3 matches left for the season!

Due to the nasty forecast and quite a few of our regular shooters attending different events throughout various states, we were very light on shooters to say the least. There were only 3 of us on hand to partake in the days festivities. Since we shoot under our covered range, we each grabbed a lane and had at it. Things went very very quick! We started the shoot right at 9:00am and were done with cleanup and on the road by 11:45am. Not bad for 80 shots, target/string removal and also taking down and packing up the tarps that cover the firing line. Overall, it turned out to be much better than the forecaster's predicted. No rain and just a light occasional breeze to deal with.

The next match, August 13th is going to be a doozy! We are going to run it WFTF style, which means that the target distances, killzone sizes and difficulty will be as the competitors will see at the Worlds in Italy this year. There will be 10 lanes with 2 targets per lane. Only 1 shot will be taken at each target with a time limit of 3 minutes per lane. We will run through the course as many times as the competitors want to up to 80 shots. All classes will be shot on the same course, though you are encouraged to pull out your sub 12 ft-lb rifle and see what the rest of the world has to deal with. The course is going to be very difficult so that Ray & Hans (2 of our semi-regular shooters) can get a little more practice in before their journey across the big pond. Come on out and try your hand with this type of format. Again, you don't need to shoot WFTF style, you can still shoot your normal FT style/rifle, just come out and have some fun!

BCSA 8/13/2011 Field Target Match Report

Let me start out by saying that I heard quite a bit of what the shooters had to say about my set-up both to me and behind my back. I am also sure that there was quite a bit more said that I didn't hear. Pretty positive that it was all in fun though :! Everyone was warned that this was going to be a very, very difficult course. I based my layout on the rules for the 2011 Worlds. Killzone sizes and distances were maximized so that our local World competitors Hans & Ray Apelles could get one last shot at figuring out where they need to practice.

The weather was pretty decent for the match, we started out in the low 60's and climbed into the upper 70's. There was sun, there were clouds and also an occasional tricky little breeze. Too bad there wasn't more wind, it would have made the course a lot more difficult.

We had a very good turnout, with 14 shooters on hand to give the course a try. Of the 14, 2 were newcomers to the world of Field Target. John M. brought out his buddy Joe E. and George F. brought out his friend Brian T. Hmmm, Bring a Buddy program, maybe I should make some incentive available to people that bring people. I warned both Joe & Brian that this was a very hard course and that they will not see this hard of a set-up at our normal monthly matches. They said that it wasn't a problem and they would be back, hopefully they felt the same after they finished. I believe they both had a great time and the friendly shooters were more than happy to let them try different equipment and offer some seasoned advice. Thanks Joe & Brian for coming out and hope to see you again next month!

The way the course was set up, was 10 lanes which included 1 standing and 1 kneeling. The first 2 times through, we shot 1 shot per target with a time limit of 3 minutes per lane. For the 3rd and 4th times through, it was decided to leave the targets as they were and shoot our normal 2 shots per target with 5 minutes per lane. This was pretty interesting, in that you could do a direct comparison as to how you did with both the Worlds and AAFTA rules meaning the 1 shot/3 min per lane or the 2 shots/5 min per lane. Personally I did just 2 points worse doing it using the 1 shot per target. That is not to say that I didn't like it. Every shot has to count, so 1, 2 or 12 doesn't really matter. Definitely a lot more up/down and moving. I also didn't see the 3 minutes as a problem either, plenty of time. Hopefully the other shooters will post their feelings on this. Worlds rules or AAFTA rules, it's all good! Thanks to all that came out, and good luck to Hans, Ray and the rest of the shooters going to the Worlds to represent the USA!

BCSA 9/10/2011 Field Target Match Report

I was torn as to whether or not to cancel this month's match due to the disaster around us, but a few shooters still wanted to shoot, so I obliged. I think we all needed a little break from reality. We wish all those affected around us a speedy recovery.

The weather couldn't have been better. After dealing with 6 straight days of rain and historical flooding in the region we were blessed with partly sunny skies and high temperatures in the low 70's with our normal inconsistent tricky breeze and very low humidity. You couldn't have asked for a better day.

We were a little light on shooters as was expected, but we did have 7 on hand to enjoy the day. Hans and Ray both were there, fresh off their World Tour. Art D. made his monthly trip up from Central Pa. Brian T. was on hand for his second field target match ever, and with his score of 63 out of 80 being match high, I'm sure we will see plenty more of him. George F. decided to switch things up a little and broke out his turned down 0.22 caliber Edgun and use it for hunter class. And to round things out, were Dave L. and myself.

At the start of the match, there was an issue with one of the GAMO targets. The first shooter (no names will be mentioned in order to protect the innocent) said that the target didn't fall with a clean hit. I told him to let the next shooter shoot and we would see what happened. After the next shooter shot, which was a total of 3 shots on a freshly painted target, the target still did not fall. I called a cold line and went to inspect the target. Yep, I know why the target didn't fall:

The target didn't fall.... How many shots have been taken.......3......yep, the target shouldn't have fell......try again

Because it is working like it is supposed to, Hot Line! Other than that, the match went off without a hitch. As usual with our close quarter matches, there was plenty of airgun chatter. Target and equipment ideas were tossed around as well as some possible equipment upgrade options.

Again, thank you all for coming out and hope to see the ones that couldn't make it come out for our last match for the year on October 8th.

BCSA 10/8/2011 Field Target Match Report

What an awesome day for Field Target and we got to celebrate a birthday to boot!

The temperatures started in the low 40's and rose to the upper 70's by the end of the match. The sky was clear and the wind was very light except for that little pesky occasional breeze that leaves shooters scratching their heads wondering where in the heck did that come from.

We had a very good turnout with 15 shooters coming out to enjoy the nice weather and our last match of the 2011 season. Art D. was able to get a couple more first time field target shooters to come out and give it a try. One was reluctant to shoot at first, but after some gentle persuasion he got behind the scope instead of the camera. I think he was happy with his decision! Welcome aboard Jack G. and Dave S. Hope to see you both again next season.

There were also 3 field target regulars that made their first trip to one of our matches. Glenn T., Nathan T. and Mike A. all made the trip up from down state to join us on the range. Hope you enjoyed the day.

We shot our first leg of 40 shots then surprised Hans and Ray with a little birthday celebration. Hans's was today and Ray's is a little later in the week. The sugar rush definitely affected quite a few of the shooters for the second 40 shot leg.

Hans's Birthday Today

As usual, there was plenty of chatter and the sharing of field target experience with the newer shooters. There is always something new to learn or try. I'm pretty sure that Brian T. filled his voice recorder and note pad before the day was out.

We concluded the match with our usual prize raffle. Nathan T. and George F. both won a Notewothy Swinger Target and Mike A. walked away with the cash prize donated by Dave L. Congrats!

Have a Fantastic off season and we'll see you all in 2012!
