YOUTH PROGRAMS

The Broome County Sportsmen's Association has a youth membership of about 50 people. In addition to training and league activities for our young men and women members, BCSA also provides support facilities for non-BCSA youth who are pursuing Boy Scouts merit badges, plus Boating and Hunter Safety courses.

NRA Junior Rifle - The NRA Junior Rifle Program and the Boy Scouts of America Rifle Shooting Merit Badge will be offered beginning on Thursday, January 12, 2001 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The NRA Junior Rifle Program is open to people 12 years of age and older. This program teaches the fundamentals of shooting and firearm handling. This program will last 6-8 weeks. The program offers plenty of shooting practice. After completion of the NRA Junior Shooting Program, the Rifle Shooting Merit Badge program can be arranged for interested Boy Scouts. Class size is limited so please register early.

For information regarding the NRA Junior Shooting Program, contact Ken Gill at 723-8849, or e-mail youth@bcsportsmen.org. See more photographs of BCSA youth activities.

NYS Youth Boating Course - NYS has required that all boat operators between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age be certified. BCSA hosts the 12-hour youth boating course, "Make Sure, Make Shore". For more information, call (607) 723-8003.

NYS Hunter Safety Courses - Each year, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation offers the NYS Hunters Safety Course to hunters. This course is offered various times during the fall, usually in October, and once in the spring. These classes are always booked full, and many of the classes are held at the BCSA clubhouse.

Note: Broome County Sportsmen's Association is not responsible for scheduling these classes, or registering attendees. For more information, call Rudy Hector at (607)-722-9533 or Jim Stark at (607)-775- 9291, who represent the NY DEC.

Camp Sponsorships for Youth - Broome County Sportsmen's Association provides financial assistance for one or more youths each summer to attend a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation camp. In 2002, BCSA sponsored a 14-year old teen ,who was not a BCSA member, to go to the DEC's Camp DeBruce. For information on eligibility, please contact the club's secretary <secretary@bcsportsmen.org>.
