NYPENN Regional Silhouette Championship
September 5-6 2009
Broome County Sportsmen's Association
Kirkwood, NY
The morning of match day arrived and the range was all set with 4 bank of 10 chickens, 4 banks of 10 pigs, 4 banks of 10 turkeys, and 4 banks of 10 rams ready to go! The only problem was that no one could see them. The morning fog was so thick we had to delay the match by about half an hour to let the fog burn off. But burn off it did and we had spectacular shooting conditions for our morning smallbore rifle silhouette match. Volunteer target setters were on hand from the track team of the Blue Ridge school district in Pennsylvania so we knew the animals would be set in record time. With a small field of only 12 shooters with 3 unclassified we had the novelty of an unclassified class and no master class. Things got underway and the animals started to fly. By the time our BBQ chicken lunch arrived from Phil’s Chicken House we had our smallbore rifle silhouette match winner: the regional champion was Neal Sundberg (AAA) of Endwell, NY with a 2 match aggregate score of 59.

We filled our bellies with good food and returned to the line for the afternoon smallbore hunter rifle match. The scores were tight and we ended up with three shooters tied with aggregate scores of 53: Lynn Morse (AAA) of Stanley, NY, Neal Sundberg (AAA) of Endwell, NY, and Bob Jodoin (AA) of Endicott, NY. After a great shoot-off that ended when Neal cross-fired on another bank of turkeys and Bob missed his first, Lynn Morse emerged as the match winner!

Our second day of competition for air rifle silhouette broke with little hint of the fog from the previous day and we had simply glorious weather conditions. This was a cozy affair with only 4 shooters on the line so everything moved along right quick and all the loose ends were tied up by midday. The regional champion for open air rifle was Bob Jodoin (A) of Endicott, NY with a 2 match aggregate score of 39. The regional champion for sporter air rifle was Pete Kofira (U) of Endwell, NY with an aggregate score of 31. And the regional champion for target air rifle was Dave Lee (A) of Binghamton, NY with an aggregate 34.

Many thanks go out to all the shooters and volunteers who took the time out of their Labor Day weekend to make this event possible! See you next year!
