Week 1 Recap

It was a warm and humid day for mid May with temperatures in the low to mid 80's. The new range set-up worked fine with no major malfunctions, except for when a daring bird landed on a turkey and knocked it over (ironic, eh?). Many raffle tickets were handed out for scoring a hit on a gold silhouette and the winner of our first raffle was Bob J. Bob was awarded the mug in absentia since he had to leave early to cut the grass (let's get those priorities straight, Bob :).

Saturday May 15 Recap

The cold front was moving slow this morning so we continued with warm and humid conditions for the shoot. Happily rain held off until later in the afternoon so we all stayed dry. Pete K. showed off his new light rifle that almost weighed less than the mug he won in the raffle. Hopefully the mower will be back in time for the next shoot or we'll be shooting under jungle conditions. Maybe we can get some silhouettes of monkeys and chimps...

Week 2 Recap

The weather was cloudy and comfortable but a good breeze made for some challenging shots. It turned out to be quite an eventful day on the silhouette range. First, the auxiliary tractor was back in operation so the grass was mowed and we were able to use the trailer to haul equipment to and fro (Yesss!). Second, the new shooting stations with integral rack were put into use. And last but certainly not least, we gave away not one but *two* gift certificates to Phil's Chicken House!!! In round 1 Jim F. knocked down 9 chickens and Ralph G. bagged 8, earning both shooters the $10.00 gift certificate. Enjoy! In round 2, Ralph G. brought out the supersize rifle and Bob J. spoke of lodging a protest because the turkeys were glued down. Come on, Bob - we all know it's magnets and velcro :) And the winner of this week's mug was none other than yours truly.

Week 3 Recap

The weather was absolutely perfect for an evening of silhouette shooting with cool temperatures and a light breeze, though 2 hours after we wrapped up another round of thunderstorms rolled through. Jim F. continued his recent domination of "the other white meat" by nailing 10 pigs in a row - for the second time this week!!! Congratulations on this awesome achievement! Frank Z. got on track and came on strong in round 2. And for the second week in a row, the mug raffle was won by yours truly.

Week 4 Recap

Wow - what a day for the BCSA silhouette range! Attendance was up and the weather was cool and cloudy, all the makings for a great silhouette shoot. It was good to see several new faces on the line, and much like the cicada Jim B. made his decadal pilgrimage out to the range. Round one saw Gary M. earn a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House with a solid 8 on the chickens. Things really picked up in round 2 when Jim F. and Frank Z. both nailed 9 chickens for a gift certificate. Frank had been struggling in round 2 but he came alive when he finished the round with 9 chickens in a row, just missing the last one for a perfect 10. Even I got into the action with a 10 on the chickens in round 2. The fix was in on the mug raffle so Jim F. took it home on a re-draw.

Week 5 Recap

The weather was cool and cloudy with just a few raindrops so all in all conditions were good for shooting. BCSA silhouette shooters continue to have a ravenous appetite for chicken as Jim F. and Neal S. both logged first round scores of 8 or better to earn a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. Gary M. had 7 but missed his last shot so it looks like Sunday brunch at Phil's will have to wait. Round 2 saw May F. join the line as a first time silhouette shooter. Without properly sighting in and with *open sights* she logged a very respectable score of 9! The Annie of Jim F. is so good, it decided not to wait for him and wanted to shoot the second round on it's own. The mug raffle was again won by Jim F. with a ticket he forgot was in his pocket. We're OK so long as Jim doesn't start "remembering" tickets up his sleeve:)

Week 6 - Rain Out

Saturday June 19 Recap

Week 7 Recap

Great summer weather prevailed for the 7th week of silhouette shooting at the BCSA range. Things got off to an interesting start as a ground hog wandered onto the range during practice and parked itself in front of the chickens. Smart animals those ground hogs - it knew the safest place on the range was right in front of the targets (more on this later)! In round 1, Bill P. posted a very nice score of 28 and bagged 9 chickens to earn a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. Round 2 saw Bob J. turn in a solid 20 with 8 chickens to get in on the gift certificate action. Round 2 also saw Jack E., Jim F., and Mike S. fall victim to the "Curse of the Ground Hog". The only way to break this curse is to clean the barrel with Holy Water and have it blessed by a priest. Hopefully we'll shoot better next time! To wrap things up, Bill P. won the mug raffle but he was not present to accept this prestegious award.

Week 8 Recap

It was another warm summer silhouette shoot and we wrapped things up just in time since storms rolled through about an hour after we left! Once Jim M. got his bearings at the range he was dead-on. If you don't believe it, just stop by Phil's Chicken House and ask him since after winning 2 gift certificates he'll be spending some time there! Gary M. is also making plans to eat some good chicken after posting an 8 in round 2 to get his gift certificate. I continued my personal quest to rewrite the laws of Newtonian physics by turning a turkey 90 degrees without knocking it down. Frank Z. made the most of his hits employing the "go for the gold" strategy. It worked to perfection since he won the mug raffle to take home his first ever BCSA Silhouette mug!

Week 9 Recap

It was another banner day at the BCSA silhouette range. First, we all got to witness the bulldozer finishing off the fill in our old creek bed. The range looks great and this should greatly facilitate things in the future. This delay only set us back about half an hour so the first relay went off at 6PM. It was our pleasure to welcome Matthew A., a junior shooter taking part in his first silhouette match. Matthew handled the pressure very well and turned in some very respectable numbers for a first time shooter! Jim M. worked out the bugs to post a perfect score of 10 on the pigs in round 1 and a very impressive perfect 10 on the turkeys in round 2. In round 2 Jim also bagged 9 chickens to win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. To wrap things up Jim F. won another mug to add to his impressive collection (Jim will be funding his retirement by selling mugs on e-bay).

Week 10 Recap

The weather looked ominous throughout the evening but we got by with only a light shower during clean-up. Apparently "silly wet" shooters don't mind damp weather since there were some good scores posted in both rounds. Round 1 saw Jim F. nail 10 pigs and both Bob J. and Jim M. won gift certificates to Phil's Chicken House with scores of 8 and 9 on the chickens, respectively. Round 1 also saw Mike S. get 9 pigs in a row, only to blow the 10th - not the first time and won't be the last time! In round 2, Jim F. continued his good night with a perfect 10 on the chickens to win a $20 gift certificate to Phil's and both Bob J. and Jim M. will be going back for seconds at Phil's as each won another gift certificate again with scores of 8 and 9 respectively. Round 2 also saw Frank Z. post a season best 19 and Matthew A. had a nice score of 15. Bob J. won the mug raffle, completing his nice evening.

Saturday July 17 Recap

The weather was quite pleasant and made for great shooting conditions throughout the morning. After fueling up with some Sunny-D and danish it was time to calm the "sugar shakes" and start shooting. It was great to see some new faces on the line as Jay K. shot silhouette again for the first time in several years and Tom A. joined us as a first time shooter. Round 1 saw Paul D. get 8 chickens with his hunter rifle to win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. I guess Paul was hungry because in round 2 he shot a perfect 10 on the chickens with his standard rifle to win a $20 gift certificate to Phil's! Great shooting, Paul! Unfortunately, Jim F. encountered a freak gust of wind that carried away his score card for round 2 ;-). To wrap things up, Paul won the mug raffle as well. But in a great gesture of sportsmanship, Paul gave the mug to first-timer Tom A.

Week 11 Recap

We were quite fortunate that the weather held throughout the shoot with no rain or thunder, but man was it HUMID! To cool things off a bit we had Sunny-D and cryogenically preserved danish courtesy of last Saturday's shoot. Round 1 was the blackjack round as Jim F., Bob J., and Gary M. all recorded scores of 21 - perhaps a good omen for Jim's upcoming trip to Vegas? Round 1 also saw Jim M. win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House with an 8 on the chickens. Gary M. and JimmyJack E. opted out of round 2 so the four remaining shooters cruised through the second round in record time.

Weather conditions were almost ideal but the breeze did kick up a bit from time to time. Round 1 saw a good turn out with 7 shooters on the line including Brian T., a recent recruit to the sport. Jim M. got 8 chickens in the round to win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. However, Jim wasn't done yet. In round 2 he got all 10 chickens to earn a $20.00 gift certificate to Phil's, and he also nailed 10 rams to finally complete his hunter rifle Grand Slam! Great shooting, Jim!

Week 13 Recap

Sometimes it pays to roll the dice. The weather looked ominous but we went ahead with the shoot anyway and it didn't rain until we were cleaning up! In round 1, it seemed if your name was "Jim" you got a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House as both Jim F. and Jim M. pegged 9 chickens to win gift certificates. Apparently Jim M. really likes Phil's so he won another certificate in round 2 with an 8 and Bob J. also did the chicken dance with a 9.

Week 14 Recap

It was another close call with the weather this week but it turned out to be a pleasant evening for shooting and we had a good turnout. In round 1, Pete K. used his ankle immobilizer to establish a rock solid position and win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House with an 8. If he keeps shooting this well he may show up in a full body cast next week. Jim M. also continued to feed his appetite for good chicken by winning gift certificates in both rounds with scores of 9 and 8. To wrap things up, Bob J. won another mug to add to his growing collection.

Saturday, August 21

Well, our luck with avoiding the rain ran out and it was a soggy shoot. However, since the turnout was low, we were able to shoot a whole round before resetting so no one got too wet. And the rain finally quit just after the start of round 2 so all in all it wasn't too bad. Apparently, rain makes silhouette shooters hungry because Bob J. and Jim M. both shot 9 chickens to win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House in round 1 and Jim got 9 more for another gift certificate in round 2. Round 2 also saw yours truly, Mike S., finally get an official 10 piggys. Due to the nature of the way the match ran, we did not count gold animals so the winner of the mug was determined in a shootout. The atmosphere was so tense during the shootout you could cut the tension with a knife. And in a truly impressive display, Bob J. used his trigger finger to close the deal and bring home the mug. Congratulations, Bob!

Week 15 Recap

It was a very pleasant evening for silhouette shooting with fair skies and a bit of a breeze. In round 1, Ralph G. broke out his long gun and shot very effectively with open sights! If the barrel was any longer Ralph could knock the animals over with the muzzle. Pete K. continued to use his shooting boot...errr...his therapeutic support that slows him enough to warrant assistance setting his targets. Interesting to note that the only gold animal Pete got was the one he set himself... In round 2 Jim M. got on a tear and posted perfect 10's on both the chickens and pigs, thereby earning another gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. Rumor has it that Jim is trying to roll his gift certificates over into a 401K plan. To wrap things up, Bob J. continued his dominance by winning yet another mug raffle. And for only $5.00, Bob will put good karma on any lottery ticket or OTB slip you bring to him.

Week 16 Recap

Wow - what a gorgeous evening! The weather was perfect with a touch of fall in the air. The great weather also led to a good turnout on the line with lots of familiar faces. Round 1 went off without a hitch and Jim M. won a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House with an 8 on the chickens. Jim then got into a zone and came in with an amazing 37 in round 2, winning another certificate to Phil's in the process. Jack E. and Jim F. both worked up an appetite during the shoot so they each won their own gift certificates to Phil's with scores of 8. The evening wrapped up with the mug raffle that was won by Gary M. in absentia.

Week 17 Recap

It was a soggy evening indeed as the remnants of Hurricane Frances brought a steady light rain and drizzle to our shoot. Only the hardiest of the hardy (or foolhardiest of the foolhardy) ventured out to the range. In round 1, Jim F. narrowly missed his last chicken and logged a score of 7 to finish just shy of a Phil's Chicken House gift certificate. In round 2, Bob J. showed iron clad resolve in his quest for a tasty dinner and he won a Phil's gift certificate with a score of 8 on the chickens. Due to the low turnout we did not count gold animals for the mug raffle. Instead we has a shoot-off! The competition was fierce with the coveted mug hanging in the balance. In the end, it was Jim F. who emerged victorious to embrace yet another chalice of champions!

Week 18 Recap

It was a very pleasant evening for silhouette shooting and the only obstacle was the rapidly approaching sunset of late summer. There was a good turn out for round 1 with 9 shooters on the line. Jim F. returned as the conquering hero and showed off some well deserved hardware from the PA State Championships. Jack E. had issues with a temperamental 10/22. The rest of us just had issues. Pete K. almost went for a swim when resetting the rams but he was unfazed and proceeded to plunk 8 chickens to win a gift certificate to Phil's Chicken House. Most shooters were one-and-done so round 2 was a bit sparse. Jim F. won the mug raffle but his cupboard is full so the mug will be carried over for next season.

Saturday September 18 Recap

The remnants of Hurricane Ivan brought a thorough soaking to the area overnight and left the range a sloggy mess. There was also a significant slump of the hill behind the rams that fully covered 2 of the railroad ties used for the target bases. This forced us to use an abbreviated set-up so only 4 shooting stations were open. I guess it all worked out OK because there was an abbreviated turn out with only Jack E., Bob J. and myself braving the cool breeze. Both rounds went off without a hitch and wading down range to reset the targets was an adventure. Perhaps next year we will have to put a lifeguard on duty during our shoots. With the low turn out we did not count gold animals for the mug raffle, opting for a "shoot out" instead. Competition for the mug was fierce but in the end it was won by yours truly. As a past winner I sent the mug home with Jack E. so he could help Bob J. bail out his basement.
