NYS Hunter Safety Courses - Each year, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation offers the NYS Hunters Safety Course to hunters. This course is offered various times during the fall, usually in October, and once in the spring. These classes are always booked full, and many of the classes are held at the BCSA clubhouse.

Note: Broome County Sportsmen's Association is not responsible for scheduling these classes, or registering attendees. For more information, call Rudy Hector at (607)-722-9533 or Jim Stark at (607)-775- 9291, who represent the NY DEC. See NOTICES for scheduling information.

NYS Youth Boating Course - NYS has required that all boat operators between the ages of 10 and 18 years of age be certified. BCSA hosts the 12-hour youth boating course, "Make Sure, Make Shore". For more information, call (607) 723-8003.

NRA Junior Rifle - Starting in January, one evening each week, BCSA holds a Junior Rifle Sporting Program. NRA Certified instructors run this class. The emphasis of the program is to teach safety and shooting skills primarily to new shooters. The program also offers plenty of time for shooting practice. If you are interested, or know of another person that may be, you can get more information by calling (607) 723-8849.

Wild Game Dinner - Each year, usually in early March, BCSA sponsors a "Wild Game Dinner". This dinner is open to the public. The dinner meat must be wild (not wild tasting) and donated by club members and friends. Special emphasis is put on the less common game, such as elk, moose, caribou, etc. This dinner is always sold out, and everyone has a good time, and lots to eat. BCSA contact is Ken Gill at 723-8849. You may wish to visit our Wild Game Recipes section to see what's cookin' there.

Empire State Games, Summer 2000 - The NY Empire State Games have been held annually since their inception in 1978. It was the first state level games to be conducted through the New York State Parks Agency. The Games have served as a national prototype for more than 40 other states. Being an amateur event, the quality of competition spans from novice to Olympic level skills.

Broome County Sportsmen Association annually supports the New York Empire State Games, and in 2000 the BCSA's Foley Road facility was selected to host several of the Games shooting events. Moving target events, outdoor pistol, youth 3-position rifle, and other events were all represented. Volunteers from BCSA membership and around the state successfully hosted nearly 200 competitors during the competition week at the BCSA range. See the results of the 2000 Empire State Games competitions.

Camp Sponsorships for Youth - Broome County Sportsmen's Association provides financial assistance for one or more youths each summer to attend a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation camp. In 2002, BCSA sponsored a 14-year old teen ,who was not a BCSA member, to go to the DEC's Camp DeBruce. For information on eligibility, please contact the club's secretary <secretary@bcsportsmen.org>.
